Personal Digital Certificates: USHER Transition

UVa's Digital Certificate infrastructure began using the new Internet2 U.S. Higher Education Root (USHER) Certificate Authority on Tuesday, July 31, 2007. The change was necessary because the Corporation for Research and Educational Networking (CREN), UVa's previous Certificate Authority, ceased operations.

Previously Issued UVa Certificates No Longer Work

As of Monday, August 13, 2007, any UVa digital certificates on your computer that were obtained before July 31st no longer work for connecting to UVa services that make use of certificates for authentication. The issuing authority for those certificates is no longer valid.

This means that if you…

  • use the UVa wireless network; or
  • log into NetBadge using a UVa digital certificate; or
  • use the UVa Anywhere VPN; or
  • use the More Secure Network VPN

…then you must…

  1. Get a new personal digital certificate; and
  2. Return to this page and follow the special instructions for your operating system and/or application:
