Passwords
This page explains which password to use for each method of access, how to change your password, and what to do if you forget your password.
Determining Which Password to Use
There are different ways to access Home Directory, so which password you use depends on your method of access to it. (Note that the most common ways of accessing Home Directory are the first two listed below.)
| How You Access Home Directory | Address | Authentication Required |
|---|---|---|
| Software program on your computer | Icon on your computer's desktop | Eservices password |
| Web interface from any computer | https://www.virginia.edu/homedir/ | blue.unix password |
| Account administration | https://admin.people.virginia.edu/cgi-local/ww/menu | |
| FTP (Secure FX, DreamWeaver) | blue.unix.virginia.edu | |
| Telnet (Secure CRT, ssh) | blue.unix.virginia.edu |
Changing Your Password
Since Home Directory may be accessed using either an EServices or blue.unix password, users should be careful to change only the password matching their access method:
- If you access Home Directory using a software program on your computer, you'll need to change your Eservices password. This password may be changed by using the Eservices password management page.
- If you access Home Directory in any other way, you'll need to change your blue.unix password. This password may be changed by:
- Using the Home Directory Service Accounts Maintenance utility;
- Using the passwd command as a UNIX prompt; or
- Emailing your request accounts@virginia.edu—but this option is for faculty and staff only.
Resetting a Forgotten Password
Since Home Directory may be accessed using either an Eservices or blue.unix password, users who have forgotten their password should follow instructions for resetting the password that matches their access method:
- If you access Home Directory using a software program on your computer, you'll need to reset your Eservices password. The Eservices password may be recovered by using the Eservices password management page.
- If you access Home Directory in any other way, you'll need to reset your blue.unix password. The blue.unix password may be recovered by following the instructions on the resetting your important passwords page.
