2008 Apple DCI / Mac Essentials Software & Settings

[Nov 23, 2009 14:09] Web access to Microsoft Live@edu accounts now works.

DCI Computer Users: In addition to the standard suite of software loaded at the factory by Apple (e.g. iPhoto, iTunes, etc.), the following applications and system settings modifications are installed on all Apple computers purchased through Cavalier Computers under the DCI program.

Download from ITC Software Central: The 2008 Mac Essentials Bundle available from ITC Software Central can be downloaded and installed on any machine running Mac OS X 10.4 or later. This bundle DOES NOT include Microsoft Office. Installation of this bundle will erase any system settings and Safari bookmarks that you may have established on your machine.

Software

  • Microsoft Office Suite 2008: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Entourage, Messenger - (DCI Build Only - Not included in the Mac Essentials download bundle from Software Central).
  • Symantic Solutions / Norton AntiVirus - ver. 11
  • UVa Home Directory Service Login Application
  • Firefox - ver. 3
  • Real Player - ver. 10

System settings

NOTE: Installing the Mac Essentials software bundle will overwrite any settings that you currently have on your machine.

System Preferences

  • Personal/Security/General
    • Disable automatic login - selected.
    • Use secure virtual memory - selected.
  • Personal/Security/Firewall
    • Set access for specific services and applications - selected.
      • Pre-populated "Allow" list with: Safari, iTunes, iChat, Mail, Entourage
    • Enable Stealth Mode - selected.
  • Energy Saver/Power Adapter
    • Set computer and display sleep to "never"
    • Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible. - unchecked
    • Automatically reduce the brightness of the display..... - unchecked
  • Energy Saver/Battery
    • Set computer and display sleep to 30 minutes.
    • Automatically reduce the brightness of the display..... - unchecked
  • Date & Time
    • The network time is set to "time.virginia.edu".
    • Time zone is set to "Eastern"

Other settings and modifications

  • The UVa LDAP server has been configured within Address Book.
  • The UVa root digital certificate - USHER - has been installed in Keychain.
  • The main UVa web page (www.virginia.edu) is the home page in Safari.
  • A series of UVa-centric web pages have been included in Safari, under "UVa Web Pages" in the bookmark bar.
  • The option to automatically open "safe" files in Safari has been turned off.
  • The "Show mounted servers" option in Finder has been turned on.
  • Icons for the UVa Home Directory Service and on DCI machines, all of the Microsoft Office Suite applications have been added to the doc.
  • DCI Only: A link to late-breaking news regarding your DCI Computer has been placed on the desktop - "Technical Support for DCI Computers".
