Connect a Windows Mobile Device (PocketPC6800, Treo 700W/WX, or Treo 750) to UVa's Exchange Service

To connect a device running on Windows Mobile (e.g., PocketPC6800, Treo700W/WX, or Treo 750) to the UVa Exchange Service:

  1. Enable Active Sync for your account.
  2. Configure your Windows Mobile smartphone.
  3. Optional: Connect to UVa's unencrypted wahoo wireless network, where it is available.

  1. Email ITC-Microsystems@virginia.edu to request that Active Sync be enabled for your account.
  2. Wait to receive an email response before proceeding.

Configure Your Windows Mobile Smartphone.

  1. Determine your Windows Mobile version. Determine which version of the Windows Mobile operating system is on your device, as the settings for Windows Mobile 5 are slightly different than those for Windows Mobile 6. To make this determinination, you can:
    • Ask your retailer;
    • Check the original box in which your device was packaged; or
    • Check your device itself:
      • If you have a touch screen: tap Start, then Settings, then System, then About. You will see the Windows Mobile version information.
      • If you have a non-touch screen: go to the Windows Mobile website for instructions.
  2. If needed, install the Entrust.net Secure Certification Authority certificate. In our experience, this certificate is installed on most mobile devices.
    1. Download the Secure Server Certification Authority certificate from the Entrust website to your computer, saving the certificate as a .cer file.
    2. Move the certificate from the computer Desktop to your Windows Mobile device through the ActiveSync Program, which is part of the installation software.
    3. Install the certificate by starting your mobile device. Then...
      1. Use File Explorer to find the .cer file.
      2. Open the .cer file:
        • Windows Mobile 5: The More prompt is not seen.
        • Windows Mobile 6: When prompted to install the certificate, click the More prompt.
      3. Approve the installation.
  3. Configure your device for a UVa Exchange Service email account.
    1. From the Home Screen, tap Start, then ActiveSync.
    2. Tap the Menu, then select Configure Server.
    3. In the Server field, type mail.eservices.virginia.edu
    4. Check the box beside This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection.
    5. If checked, uncheck the box beside Try to get e-mail setting automatically from the Internet.
    6. In the Username field, type your UVa computing ID in the form:
      eservices\computing ID. For example: eservices\mst3k
    7. In the password field, type your password.
      • Note: The password for your Exchange account is the same as your Eservices password. If you do not know this password, (re)set it now.
    8. If prompted for a Domain name field, type: eservices.virginia.edu
    9. To verify any of the synchronization options, click Advanced.

Optional: Connect to UVa's Unencrypted wahoo Wireless Network.

To connect to UVa's unencrypted wahoo wireless network, where it is available, your Windows Mobile device must have a wireless card. (Most do.) Then:

  1. Find your device's MAC address, so you can register its network card. The MAC (Media Access Control) address, also known as a “network card address” or “physical address,” uniquely identifies your device to the UVa network.

Note that the Network Card Address/Physical Address/MAC Address is an alphanumeric value, which is listed in six groups of two hexadecimal digits, separated by hyphens (-), e.g. 01-2B-C5-67-89-ab.

To find your Network Card Address/Physical Address/MAC Address:

    1. Click Start, then Settings, then Connections, then Wireless LAN, then Advanced.
    2. Click MAC, and make a note of the address of the wireless card in your device.

If the above does not work for you, please search the Web to find instructions on locating the MAC address of your Windows Mobile smartphone. Be sure to include your model information in the search terms, e.g. “locate Treo750 mac address.”

  2. Register your device's wireless card for use on the UVa network. On your computer, go to the UVa Network Registration website. Then:
    1. Click the Already Registered link.
    2. Under Faculty, Staff, and Students, click the Enter button. If needed, log into NetBadge.
    3. Click the Register a device for network access link.
    4. In the Physical/Hardware Address field, type the Network Card Address/Physical Address/MAC Address from your Windows Mobile device's wireless card, which you just looked up.
    5. From the This is a wireless device dropdown menu, select Yes.
    6. From the Contact Group dropdown menu, select No Group.
    7. Leave the Asset Tag (optional) field blank.
    8. Leave the Serial Number (optional) field blank.
    9. To differentiate this device from your other registered devices, in the Identifying Notes (e.g., Make/Model, Location) field, type some identifying information such as your UVa computing ID (example: mst3k) and the type of Windows Mobile device you have (PocketPC6800, Treo 700W/WX, Treo 750).
    10. Click the Submit Registration button.
  3. Add the unencrypted wahoo wireless network, where available.

After you have configured your device to use UVa's unencrypted wahoo wireless network (where it is available), your Windows Mobile smartphone will autodetect the network from then on, and you will be able to send and receive email or access the Internet using it. Should your device fail to autodetect the network when you are within range, you will need to manually select the UVa unencrypted wahoo wireless network.

Note that the wahoo network is unencrypted. At this time, it is not possible to connect any smartphone to UVa's encrypted cavalier wireless network.

    1. On your Windows Mobile device, click Start.
    2. Click Settings, then Connections, then Wi-Fi.
    3. In the Configure Wireless Networks field, type wahoo.
    4. In Configure Network Authentication:
      • For Authentication, select Open.
      • For Data Encryption, select Disabled.
    5. Click Finish.
      • To test your configuration, make sure you are in an area where UVa's unencrypted wahoo network is available. (You will see the secure network, cavalier, listed anytime you are in range of wahoo, even though wahoo may not display). Then, attempt to connect to the UVa Exchange Service.
