To connect a device running on the Palm operating system (e.g., a Treo 650/680/700P/755P) to the UVa Exchange Service:
- Enable Active Sync for your account.
- Configure your Treo.
- Optional: Connect to UVa's unencrypted wahoo wireless network, where it is available.
1. Enable Active Sync for Your Account.
- Send an email to ITC-Microsystems@virginia.edu to request Active Sync be enabled for your account.
- Wait to receive an email message in response before proceeding.
2. Configure Your Treo.
- Download any updates for the Treo at the Palm website.
- Install the Exchange Activesync Update for Treo Smartphones.
- Configure your account. On your Treo smartphone:
- Select Email, then New Account, then Setup.
- In the Name: field, type a name to help you identify this account.
- At the prompt for Mail Service, in the dropdown window, select:
- Versa Mail: Exchange/ActiveSync.
- Outlook: Exchange/Outlook.
- In the Username field, type your UVa computing ID in the form eservices\computing ID. For example: eservices\mst3k
- Note: On the Treo, to find the backslash—the \ character between eservices and your UVa computing ID:
- Hold down the Alt key, and press the forward slash / key.
- In the small vertical window that appears, use the arrow keys to navigate to the backslash (\), and select it.
- Note: On the Treo, to find the backslash—the \ character between eservices and your UVa computing ID:
- In the Server field, type: mail.eservices.virginia.edu.
- Check the box beside SSL.
- Note: Treo Models 650/680/700P/755P use the Palm operating system, which does not contain a certificate store, so these devices do not require a certificate.
- In the email address field, type your UVa Exchange Service email address in the form your UVa computing ID@eservices.virginia.edu. For example: mst3k@eservices.virginia.edu.
- In the password field, type your password.
- Note: The password for your Exchange account is the same as your Eservices password. If you do not know this password, (re)set it now.
Notes:
- After setting up Exchange connectivity, your Palm is now required to use a timed lock-out password. This may be a change for you if you were not using one before.
- If the calendar on your Treo does not update:
- There may be recurring appointments on your UVa Exchange service calendar that extend for more than two years and/or have no end date. Check your recurring appointments and limit them to two years. The Treo does not recognize appointments and/or events that extend beyond two years.
- One or more of the Treos listed above may not sync correctly with your UVa Exchange service calendar if you are using Outlook 2007 or Vista or both. Check the Palm website to learn how to correct this problem.
3. Connect to UVa's Unencrypted wahoo Wireless Network.
To connect to UVa's unencrypted wahoo wireless network, where it is available, your Palm device must have a wireless card. (Most do.) Then:
- Find your device's MAC address, so you can register its network card. The MAC (Media Access Control) address, also known as a "network card address" or "physical address," uniquely identifies your device to the UVa network.
Note that the Network Card Address/Physical Address/MAC Address is an alphanumeric value, which is listed in six groups of two hexadecimal digits, separated by hyphens (-). For example: 01-2B-C5-67-89-ab.
To find your Treo's Network Card Address/Physical Address/MAC Address:
- Select System, then Preferences, then Network.
- Make a note of the address for the wireless card in your Treo.
- Register your device's wireless card for use on the UVa network. On your computer, go to the UVa Network Registration website. Then:
- Click the Already Registered link.
- Under Faculty, Staff, and Students, click the Enter button. If needed, log into NetBadge.
- Click the Register a device for network access link.
- In the Physical/Hardware Address field, type the Network Card Address/Physical Address/MAC Address for your Treo's wireless card, which you just looked up.
- From the This is a wireless device dropdown menu, select Yes.
- From the Contact Group dropdown menu, select No Group.
- Leave the Asset Tag (optional) field blank.
- Leave the Serial Number (optional) field blank.
- To differentiate this device from your other registered devices, in the Identifying Notes (e.g. Make/Model, Location) field, type some identifying information such as your UVa computing ID (example: mst3k) and the type of Palm device you have (Treo 650/680/700P/755P).
- Click the Submit Registration button.
- After you have configured your device to use UVa's unencrypted wahoo wireless network (where it is available), your Palm Treo smartphone will autodetect the network from then on, and you will be able to send and receive email or access the Internet using it. Should your device fail to autodetect the network when you are within range, you will need to manually select the UVa unencrypted wahoo wireless network.
Note that the wahoo network is unencrypted, and at this time at UVa, it is not possible to connect any smartphone to UVa's encrypted cavalier wireless network.
- On your Palm Treo device, go to Start.
- Select Settings, then Connections, then Wi-Fi.
- In the Configure Wireless Networks field, type wahoo.
- In Configure Network Authentication:
- For Authentication, select Open.
- For Data Encryption, select Disabled.
- Click Finish.
- To test your configuration, make sure you are in an area where UVa's unencrypted wahoo network is available (you will see the secure network, cavalier, listed anytime you are in range of wahoo, even though wahoo may not display), and then attempt to connect to the UVa Exchange Service.
