To connect an iPhone or iPod touch to the UVa Exchange Service via an IMAP connection, you will need to:

  1. Register your iPhone or iPod touch on the UVa network.
  2. Access UVa's unencrypted wahoo wireless network using the iPhone or iPod touch.
  3. Configure the iPhone or iPod touch for email access.

1. Register Your iPhone or iPod Touch on the UVa network.

  1. Determine the Wi-Fi Address of your iPhone or iPod touch, so you can register it. On your device:
    1. Tap Settings, then General, then About.
    2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and make a note of the Wi-Fi Address of your iPhone or iPod touch.
  2. Register the Wi-Fi Address of your iPhone or iPod touch on the UVa network. On your computer, go to the UVa Network Registration website.
    1. Click the Already Registered link.
    2. Under Faculty, Staff, and Students, click the Enter button. If needed, log into NetBadge.
    3. Click the Register a device for network access link.
    4. In the Physical/Hardware Address field, type the Wi-Fi Address from your iPhone or iPod touch, which you just looked up.
    5. From the This is a wireless device dropdown menu, select Yes.
    6. From the Contact Group dropdown menu, select No Group.
    7. Leave the Asset Tag (optional) field blank.
    8. Leave the Serial Number (optional) field blank.
    9. To differentiate this device from your other registered devices, in the Identifying Notes (e.g. Make/Model, Location) field, type some identifying information such as your UVa computing ID (example: mst3k) and either iPhone or iPod touch.
    10. Click the Submit Registration button.

2. Access UVa's Unencrypted wahoo Wireless Network.

While this step is optional for iPhones, it is mandatory for iPod touch users, because the iPod touch doesn't have a phone-based network. So, if you want to use UVa's Exchange Service on an iPod touch, you must configure for wahoo, and manually re-connect each time.

After you have configured your device to use UVa's unencrypted wahoo wireless network (where it is available), your device should autodetect the network from then on, and you will be able to send and receive email or access the Internet using it. Should your device fail to autodetect the network when you are within range, you will need to manually select the UVa unencrypted wahoo wireless network.

Note that the wahoo network is unencrypted, and at this time at UVa, it is not possible to connect any smartphone to UVa's encrypted cavalier wireless network.

  1. On your iPhone or iPod touch: Tap Settings, then General, then tap Network.
  2. Select Wi-Fi, then Other.
  3. In Network Name field, type wahoo.
  4. In the Security field, indicate none.
  5. At the bottom of this window, tap Join.

3. Configure the iPhone or iPod Touch for Email Access.

There are two ways to configure your iPhone or iPod touch for email access, via IMAP:
