Connect a Mobile Device to the UVa Exchange Service

Costs & Policies Associated with UVa Exchange Service on a Mobile Device

Understand the following costs and policies:

  • BlackBerrys can use:
    • The BlackBerry Enterprise Server, or BES, a for-fee service (including both a one-time license initialization and an ongoing per-month license fee).
    • The Blackberry Internet Service, or BIS, which uses Active Sync and is a no-fee service.
  • Other mobile devices use Active Sync, which is a no-fee service.
    • ITC requires that a simple 4-character personal identification number (PIN) be created for your device. If your device is not used for 60 minutes, you will be required to re-enter your PIN to place an outgoing call or use a Bluetooth device. You will be prompted to create this PIN the first time your device syncs with the UVa Exchange Service.
    • Devices using Active Sync may not sync all Exchange services wirelessly; some services may need to be synchronized using a cradle and a program like HotSync®.
    • If you lose your device, for security you must remotely wipe your device using Outlook Web Access (OWA).
  • For all devices, synchronizing with the Exchange server requires time and will affect the number of minutes you use each month. Some have found that the increases to their service bill have been non-trivial.
