Configure Eudora to Use SMTP Auth

Note: SMTP Authentication operates automatically in Eudora. Eudora checks the UVa SMTP server to see if it allows authentication when you attempt to send a message through a third party Internet Service Provider (ISP) with your UVa email account settings. If authentication is allowed, Eudora will prompt you to login. Note for Users of Windows Eudora 6.1 or Earlier.

Follow the steps below to configure Eudora 6.2 to send email from off-Grounds with SMTP Auth:
  1. Start Eudora.
  2. (Open preferences/options)…
    • …for Macintosh: From the Eudora menu, choose Preferences.
    • …for Windows: From the Tools menu, choose Options.
  3. In the left Category column, click the Sending Mail icon.
  4. For SMTP server,…
    • …for a CMS account, type: cms.mail.virginia.edu
    • …for a unix.mail account, type: smtp.mail.virginia.edu
  5. Check the box Allow Authentication (Mac: Allow Authorization).
  6. Click OK.

If Port 25 Is Blocked

Port 25 is used by default to send email messages. However, to prevent spam from being routed through their email servers, your ISP may not allow the use of port 25. In this case, follow the steps below to change your sending email port designation:

Macintosh Instructions

  1. Start Eudora.
  2. From the Eudora menu, choose Preferences.
  3. In the left Category column, click the Sending Mail icon.
  4. Check the Use submission port (587) box.
  5. Click OK.

Windows Instructions

  1. Start Eudora.
  2. From the Tools menu, choose Options.
  3. From the Category column, click the Ports icon. If you do not see a Ports icon, install the necessary plug-in:
    1. Close Eudora.
    2. Right-click the start button and select Explorer.
    3. Open the Local Disk (C:)/ Program Files/ Eudora/ extrastuff directory.
    4. Move the esoteric.epi file up from the extrastuff directory to the Eudora directory.
    5. Close Explorer.
    6. Start Eudora.
    7. Return to step 2.
  4. Type 587 in the box labeled SMTP Port (25).
  5. Click OK.

Note for Users of Windows Eudora Version 6.1 and Earlier:

SMTP Auth fails if STARTTLS is enabled in your Eudora program. To resolve the problem, try one of two things:

  • Recommended: Upgrade to a newer version of Eudora from ITC Software Central; or
  • Change your Eudora configuration to disable STARTTLS setting:
    1. Start Eudora.
    2. From the Tools menu, choose Options.
    3. In the left Category column, select Sending Mail.
    4. In the Secure Sockets when Sending section, select Never.
    5. Click OK.
