List Member Subscription Information

[Nov 23, 2009 14:09] Web access to Microsoft Live@edu accounts now works.

Basic information and instructions for members of Mailman mailing lists at the University of Virginia. Options available for a particular list will vary depending on how the list administrator has configured the list.

Accessing Mailman list member options

Member options may be configured by visiting the Mailman mailing list member configuration form for your list. When you access the list member options website for your mailing list, you will be required to login to change any of your options. If you have forgotten your password, you can request that it be sent to you via email.

Subscribe to a Mailman mailing list

To subscribe to a Mailman mailing list at the University of Virginia:

  1. Access the list information website for the mailing list.
  2. Complete the Subscribing to mailing list section.
  3. Click on the Subscribe button.

Depending on how the list is configured:

You will receive an email message from mailman-owner@list.mail.virginia.edu that provides a website for you to visit to confirm that you want to be a member of the list.

The list administrator will receive notification via an email message from mailman-owner@list.mail.virginia.edu that you want to subscribe to the list and will either allow the subscription to take place or deny you membership in the list.

If the list administrator allows the subscription, you will receive an email message from Mailman-owner@list.mail.virginia.edu that provides a website for you to visit to confirm that you want to be a member of the list.

After you have become a member of a list, you will usually (again, depending on how the list administrator has configured the list) receive another email message that tells you your list password as well as the Web address providing the member options configuration form. Depending on how the list is configured, you may receive this same message once per month, as a reminder. If you subscribe to more than one list using the same email address, you will receive only one of these messages each month. If you subscribe to multiple lists using a variety of email addresses, you will receive one of these messages for each email address you have used to subscribe.

Change subscriber address

A confirmation email will be sent to the new address you provide, and must be confirmed within 3 days for the change to take effect.

Unsubscribe from a Mailman mailing list

To unsubscribe from a mailing list:

  1. Access the member options website for the mailing list via the list access form.
  2. Click the Unsubscribe button.
  3. Confirm your request to unsubscribe by following directions in the resulting email sent to the email address you initially subscribed to the list.

View your other mailing list subscriptions

Click the List my other subscriptions button to view a list of all the other mailing lists at list.mail.virginia.edu of which you are a member with the same email address used in this list subscription. Use this option if you want to make the same membership option changes to other subscriptions.

Email address reminder / view subscriber list

If you do not know how your email address appears on the list, you can have Mailman display that information or ask the list administrator to provide it to you.

  1. Go to the list information website for the mailing list.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page.
  3. Click on the Visit Subscriber List button in the Subscriber section, if that option is available to you. Mailman should display the addresses of the members of the list.

Note that the addresses may be displayed by substituting the word at for the symbol @, as in: mst3k at virginia.edu - you would need to specify this address to Mailman as mst3k@virginia.edu.

To request that the list administrator tell you your email address as it appears on the list, send an email message to the administrator of the list at the address:

list_name-owner@Virginia.edu

In the above, replace list_name with the name of the list for which you want to learn how your address appears on the list.

In your message to the list administrator, request that the list administrator send you your address as it appears on the list, telling the list administrator the name of the list for which you need this information.

Mailman mailing list passwords

Your list member password allows you to change your membership information (your email address, your member password, your name), to unsubscribe from the list, to list the names of the other Mailman lists at U.Va. of which this address of yours is a member, to change your list password and to make changes to your subscription options - how you receive messages from the list and which messages to receive.

Have your list password emailed to you
  1. When you have your email address as subscribed to the mailing list, go to the member options website for which you need your list member password.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of that page.
  3. Click the Remind button beneath the words Password reminder.

Your list member password will be sent to the email mailbox that receives messages for your address, as your address appears on the list. The message you receive also will provide a link that will take you directly to your Membership Options page where you can make changes to your subscription to the list.

Change your password
  1. Access the member options website for the mailing list via the list access form.
  2. Enter your password on the member options page and click the Log In button.
  3. Scroll down until you see Change Your Password.
  4. Type the new password you choose in the field provided, then type it again to confirm.
  5. Click the Change My Password button to set your new password.
