Mailman List Administrative Passwords

Mailman mailing lists have a number of different passwords associated with them. For list administrators, there are two passwords:

  • The list administrator password controls access to the list for the person who has the ability to change the list configuration, the list passwords, the list administrator, and the list membership.
  • The list moderator password controls access to the Administrative requests for mailing list page that is used by someone designated by the list administrator to review messages that have been held prior to their distribution to list members. After reviewing a held message, list moderators can accept the message for distribution to list members, discard it, or defer a decision on the message.

List administrators are always list moderators, but also can give this specific task to others without giving those individuals full control of the list. To enable one or more list moderators, the list administrator must

    • specify the email address(es) of the list moderator(s) on the General Options page of the list administrative website and
    • specify a list moderator password on the Password page linked from the Initial Options page of the list administsrative website.

Some lists neither have nor need list moderators.

List Administrator Password is Known

If the current list administrator password is known, the list administrator and list moderator passwords may be changed via the Password page linked from the Initial Options page of the list administrative website.

List Administrator Password is Unknown

If the current list administrator password is not known, you must write to postmaster@Virginia.edu to ask the UVa email postmaster change your list administrator. If needed, after you know your list administrator password, you can reset your list moderator password. Postmaster will need to know:

  • your UVa computing ID (example: mst3k),
  • your relationship to the list (Are you the list administrator or do you have some other authority to be requesting this change?), and
  • the name of the list for which you need the list administrator password changed.

After postmaster has reset your list administrator password, you can change it to a value known only to you and any other administrators for the list by using the Password page linked from the Initial Options page of the list administrative website.
