VForum User Guide

This page is for end users. To learn about installing and configuring VForum, see vfdoc.html.

  2. How to use VForum

What VForum is

VForum creates Web pages for on-line discussions. It is designed for 4 sections, each of which may be devoted to a particular topic. Realizing that even in a particular discussion, each message needs something to guide the flow of discussion, each reply has a topic. You'll read any messages you haven't seen, then reply to messages. It is suggested that when you reply, you use the same topic as the message you are replying to. This makes it easier for someone to follow the conversation. Forum discussions tend to last for days or weeks. Read all messages before replying. The discussion may have ended before you reply, and the only way to know is to read to the end of the forum. It is embarrassing to reply to a topic only to later find that a message you didn't read made the same reply before you. Messages are displayed in the order they were created. Old message are at the top, and the newest messages are at the bottom of the page.

How to use VForum

  1. Start at the "Read the messages in an area:". Click on the link to the topic area. Read all the messages before replying. If the person who set up the forum has not yet created an area, you'll get the "404 page not found" message.
  2. Click the "Reply to topic (n)" link to create a reply. Remember the topic and retype it, or copy and paste it into the new reply.
  3. Put in your name and email address, and enter the text of your comment.
  4. Click the "Post Message" button.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the message section and take a look at your new reply. You can't take it back or erase it (the administrator can do this), but if you see a faux pas, you could post a follow up reply.
