Creating
a Web site: where to put it
In order
to create a Web site at the University of Virginia, you must have an account
on a machine that acts as a Web server. Web servers display your Web site
to the world. Choosing the appropriate server for your site involves two
primary steps: 1) determining your affiliation
(or the affiliation of your department/organization/academic class) with
the University of Virginia; 2) determining if your site will use technology
that is only available on certain Web servers.
Please
note that all use of computers at the University of Virginia, including
personal, departmental and organizational Web sites, is governed by University
policies regarding appropriate use of University equipment. These policies
are available via the Web site at: http://www.itc.virginia.edu/policy/Policies.
Information
on the design and creation of Web pages and Web sites can be found at:

should consider obtaining a Web site on the faculty.virginia.edu
server. For more information, please visit the Web site at: http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/web/faculty.html
Another
option for Faculty members is the Instructional Toolkit. This easy-to-use
service allows faculty members to create on-line syllabi and instructional
materials quickly. Please visit Toolkit documentation at:
http://toolkit.virginia.edu

| Departments
|
Staff
at the University of Virginia who are creating Web pages for their
department should put those pages on the server appropriate for their
department. Some departments have their own servers that are used
for this purpose. Ask your department if it provides this capability.
Health System departments should consider locating their pages on
the hsc.virginia.edu server. Please contact: wdc-support@Virginia.edu
for assistance and visit the Web site at: http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/internet/webcenter/
for more information.
Other
academic and administrative departments at the University of Virginia
who do not have their own Web server can usually locate their pages
on the www.virginia.edu server. Please contact: webmaster@Virginia.edu
for assistance.
Some departments
may wish to
lease space on which to store a website.
Should your department want to hire someone
to create your page or to work with you to use a database with your
Web site, please visit the Web site at: http://www.itc.virginia.edu/ads/forfee.html
and read the information listed under Departmental Web Application Development.

| Others
|
The
location of a Web site that does not match any of the above categories
(for example, a group that has affiliation with the University of
Virginia but is not an official part of the University) will vary.
Should you fall into this category, please contact: web-consult@Virginia.edu,
describe what your group's function is, how the group is related to
the University and what you need (a Web site, other assistance?) to
the Web consultant. The Web consultant will attempt to provide you
with information about which server may be appropriate for you or
other options that you should consider.
The University's Hostmaster
can provide information on policies regarding virtual host names.
A virtual host name is created when a consortium of institutions have
a Web page hosted at U.Va. |
