New Student Web Guide

Introduction

If you are a new student at the University of Virginia, a sample Web page has already been created for you. You may view your sample Web page by surfing to the following Web page:

http://www.people.virginia.edu/~mst3k

where mst3k is your U.Va. computing id (that is, the id you use when you log in to check your e-mail). If you are interested in modifying your Web page or adding new pages to your site, the rest of this document will give you some quick tips.

Quick Tips

The first thing you will want to do is create a folder on your local computer where you will store your Web site.

You will then want to create and save a Web page in that folder. You may create this Web page using a Web editor, such as Dreamweaver, Front Page, or Netscape Composer, or you may code html by hand if you choose to do so. When you save the file, call it "home.html" if you want it to be your "home page" -- in other words, the page that automatically appears when someone goes to:

http://www.people.virginia.edu/~mst3k (where mst3k is your computing id).

Otherwise you may save the file under any other name (be sure to add a .html filename extension). For example, if you saved the file as "blahblah.html", when you publish the page, you will find it on the Web at:

http://www.people.virginia.edu/~mst3k/blahblah.html (where mst3k is your computing id).

After you have created your pages and saved them locally you will want to upload them to your public_html directory using either Home Directory Service or a secure FTP client like SecureFX or Fugu. For more instructions, see our quick reference documents on Home Directory Service, SecureFX or Fugu.
