U-010 Unix Mail Overview

Information Technology and Communication (ITC) supports several
Unix systems (RS/6000, NeXT, Silicon Graphics and Sun) which each offer
various electronic mail programs. When you invoke the mail command at
the Unix prompt, you will get the default mail program for the machine
on which your account resides. If you are using UVa's menu system
(Umenu) and you choose the electronic mail option, you will invoke the
default mailer for Umenu. Of course in either case, you can modify your
editor environment variable or customize the Umenu system editor
variable to the editor of your choice. The following chart details the
mailers available on each of the Unix systems, the default mailer for
each system and Umenu, any additional documentation, where to find that
documentation and additional mailers supported by ITC. Documents listed
may be found in the /help/docs directory and can also be accessed using
GWIS, the Grounds-Wide Information System. The command hints is another
way to find information about various mailers.

Note 1:
If you prefer to use a version of Mush (Mail user's shell) similar
to the UCB (University of California at Berkeley) mailer, issue the
     command:

ucbmail (at the mail prompt when reading a message)
     or
~:ucbmail (at the beginning of a line when writing a message)

These commands cause a file named .ucbmail to be placed in your
HOME directory. Do not delete this file. After executing the
ucbmail command, exit the mail program. The next time you issue
the mail command, you will be using the UCB version of Mush.

Note 2:

The only documentation currently available can be obtained on-line
by using the following command at the Unix command prompt:

                     man pine

or for a formatted version from a PostScript printer:

                     manpage -Pyour_printer_name pine

Note 3:

Pine is available on the Solaris and Sun 4 platforms
     but not the Sun 3.

Note 4:

NeXTMail is a mail interface for the NeXT Window environment. The
Mail icons can be invoked by choosing menu selection Services, then
Mail. To choose an option you must double click on the preferred
     icon.

Note 5:

Select "Electronic Mail" from the main menu.

Note 6:

Before using the commands to invoke a different mail program from
the Umenu default, you must exit to the Unix command prompt by
selecting "Go To Unix" from the main menu.
