Clients for Macs & PCs:
FTP, Telnet

Introduction

The University places stringent security requirements on all equipment connected to UVa's network. Links to documents pertinent to specific platforms are included in the appropriate sections below. Three important general documents are in place that outline the policy itself, the enforcement of that policy, and FAQ's with respect to the policy:

University-wide Security Policy
Failure to comply means loss of network access
ITC & Health Sciences Computing Policy Guide

To protect computers used within the University community, ITC has licensed several software programs for use by faculty, staff and students. Among them are Norton Antivirus, SecureCRT, SecureFX, and NiftyTelnet. Each of the sections below gives links to take you to documentation for the specific application. Please note that some of the software is licensed, and you are therefore expected to remove it from your computer should you leave the University as student, staff, or faculty.

For PC-compatible

SecureCRT - provides a secure interface, using the Secure Shell (SSH2), for login and data transfer using telnet and serial connections. (Windows 95, 98, 2000, and ME)

SecureFX - provides secure data transfer with SFTP or with FTP over an SSH2 connection. The application also allows standard FTP and anonymous FTP in certain cases. It has a simple Explorer-like interface, so it's easy to learn and use. Just drag and drop files between local and remote systems. SecureFX supports multiple concurrent transfers as well as ones from server to server. (Windows 95, 98, 2000, and ME)

AbsoluteFTP - provides data transfer with FTP only. This application is not secure, but is available for use in any situation or by any person not meeting the criteria for download. (Windows 95, 98, 2000, and ME)

WS_FTP - another FTP application that allows quick and easy file transfers between different operating systems. WS_FTP will be phased out of use, since there will be no further upgrades to the product. (Windows 95, 98, 2000, and ME)

For Macintosh

NiftyTelnet - a fast, freeware telnet client for the Macintosh into which support for SSH has been incorporated. Local documentation is at

http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/mac/nifty_telnet/niftytelnet.html

or you can go directly to Software Central and download the application.

Unfortunately NiftyTelnet is not yet capable of giving you a "secure" FTP mechanism. We are currently looking for an application that will provide fully encrypted secure FTP sessions, and there will be an announcement to the University community when such an application is being rolled out.

NCSA Telnet - provides interactive access from a Macintosh computer to UNIX hosts on TCP/IP networks.

Fetch - allows file transfers between a Macintosh computer and a UNIX host on TCP/IP networks.
