LDAP for Mac OS X Address Book

(For Mac OS X 10.2.x and later)

 

What is the "whois" database?
WHOIS is the user database maintained by ITC. The information for WHOIS comes from the Registrar's Office, Payroll, ITC, and other administrative departments. Information in the WHOIS database includes your name, your classification (staff, student, faculty, etc.), your department, your telephone number, your messenger mail address, and your e-mail address.

Configuring "whois" in your address book

This will set up LDAP in you address book and Mac Mail.

1. Go to Address Book located in the Applications folder and double-click on it.

2. Click on the Address Book Menu.  Click on Preferences. 

3. Click on ldap in the preferences window. Click the add button

4. Enter the text UVA in the Name field and ldap.virginia.edu in the Server: field.

5. in the Search Base field, type: o=University of Virginia,c=US (there should not be a space between the comma and the c)

6. Click Save.

7. In the LDAP preferences window make sure there is a checkmark next to UVA.

You may now search by last name or UVa computing ID, in your Address Book.

Or in the To field of a new e-mail message.
