The Linux Install Server, linuxload.itc.virginia.edu, is used to install RedHat via NFS. Installation instructions in "BasicInstall" (see sidebar) are generic. These instructions include links when there are necessary modifications, generally by RedHat version. "Known Issues" identify specific problems that have been encountered. "Archived Instructions" are by version and model and refer specifically to the hardware on Dell computers purchased through the Desktop Computing Initiative (DCI) program.

Post-install Modifications

All installations should be followed by the recommended post-install instructions that insure a minimum of security. Failure to sufficiently secure your linux computer may result in your being blocked from the network.

Updates

RPMs are available on linuxload.itc.virginia.edu in the directory /export/redhat-versNo/ for versions 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 8.0, and 9. Refer to the document Mounting File Systems for details on syntax.

Known Issues

With RedHat 7.3, samba (as installed) fails with the current version of the NetApp (used to access home directories on blue.unix). If using version 7.3, you must uninstall both samba-common and samba-client. Then use the following links to download version 2.2.7-1.7.3 of both samba-common and samba-client and install them.
