Testing VPN installation

Versions of the VPN dialer client distributed by ITC after June 15, 2001 included the option to connect to a test VPN concentrator to verify your installation of VPN prior to being issued a VPN account.

For complete VPN connection instructions see http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/integratedsystem/vpn/usage.html

You can identify your version of the VPN client as one which supports these test connections by going to the arrow to the right of the Connection Entry window and looking for an entry reading 'vpn-test'.

Cisco VPN Dialer Start Screen with vpn-test selected

Choose that entry and the name of the Host name or IP address of remote server: box will change to vpn-test.admin.Virginia.EDU.

Click on Connect, a screen will pop up indicating that the client is attempting to connect to the server. If you have any problems connecting the information in the Connection history box will be needed by the ITC Computing Help Desk (or vpn-consult@virginia.edu) to assist in diagnosing the problem.

If the connection is proceeding normally you will see an User name and Password request, enter one of the following pairs:

Username Password
test1 test1-50
test2 test2-50
test3 test3-50
test4 test4-50
test5 test5-50

If you provide a valid user name/password pair for the test connection, the VPN dialer will become an icon in your systray that looks like a lock. If the user name or password given are incorrect the login box will re-appear. After 5 failed attempts the status screen will show an entry User authentication failed. You cannot successfully log in to the test vpn system with your individual id an password.

If you have successfully logged in to the test VPN concentrator, try connecting with your web browser to the test web server at
http://oracle-test.admin.virginia.edu

Your web browser should show you a page confirming your connection. If you get an error message instead verify the VPN dialer is still active (on the systray) and try again. If the error continues contact the ITC Computing Help Desk at 924-3731 or write vpn-consult@virginia.edu with details of your problem, including time of day you tried to connect and the test user id and password you used.

When finished with the test exit the VPN connection by right-clicking on the lock in the systray and choosing disconnect so that the connection can be used by others.

The next time you use the VPN Dialer be sure to change the setting for Connection Entry back to 'Oracle Applications' and log in with your own ID and Password. You cannot connect to the production Integrated System with the test configuration for VPN.
