Notice: If upon launching the installer for the VPN software the error message appears, "Cannot find installation path for application," see the quick and easy fix.

The following is a summary of the warning provided on the Cisco download site for this software:

Because the VPN Client contains encryption software, it is subject to strict export regulations. As a result, installation must be done by the individual who will be using the product. This allows the user to acknowledge his/her responsibility for abiding by the regulations. Anyone who fails to abide by those regulations can be fined up to $100,000 and spend up to 10 years in prison.

When you download the software you are responsible for that copy.

The VPN client is required to connect to the UVA Integrated Systems Project servers and is available for Windows 95, 98, NT and 2000 at https://www.itc.virginia.edu/cgi-local/vpn/vpn.exe.

As of June 15, 2001 there is a newer version of the client than distributed prior to that date. If you are installing this version on a machine with a previous version, or to correct a problem with a previous installation see the Deinstallation Note.

System Requirements

Dell Optiplex GX-1 users and Latitudes with Docking Bays: Some of the first DCI, Dell Optiplex GX-1 systems running Windows 98, and Dell Latitudes connected with docking bays require a network driver upgrade. Users with Windows NT have reported that they did not need to upgrade drivers.

Windows 95 users must have the Winsock2 and Dial Up Networking 1.3. They are available as a combined installer from Microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/dun13win95/default.asp
Important: Read the instructions on the System Requirements link on the download page before starting the download.

Windows NT and 2000 systems installation must be done as Administrator. Administrators setting this up for users in Domains using Roaming Profiles must arrange for the appropriate settings to be installed in the 'All Users' profile see the Roaming Profiles note below.

Windows XP: Internet Connection Firewall needs to be disabled, by default it is. Click here for Windows XP installation concerns.

You may want to print these instructions. The VPN installer fills the screen and you will not be able to consult these instructions during the installation process.

You must restart your computer immediately after installation. Users delaying the restart have reported that configuration information is lost and the software needs to be reinstalled.

Eve if you do not have a VPN account, the new client makes it possible to test your vpn connection.

Notes:

Roaming profiles: If your department uses roaming profiles in a Windows domain the configuration information in the installer will be lost. Similar problems happen for users who use Kixstart or other programs to reset user information. If when you start the VPN Dialer you see no information for what server to connect to, the user should try Option, Import. If that doesn't solve your problem contact vpn-consult@virginia.edu.

Deinstallation notes: The VPN client can be uninstalled from the Add/Remove Programs control panel (listed as 'VPN Client). If prompted to delete existing profiles and/or Cisco certificates, do that. Reboot the machine. If the folder C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\VPN 3000 Client exists, delete it prior to installing a new version fo the client. Failure to delete the VPN 3000 Client directory can cause any errors in the earlier installation to carry forward to the new version.
