ISP Installation Short Form

Integrated Systems Installation Short-form

This documented is intended for those people who need to do multiple installations and don't need the detailed step-by-step instructructions available elsewhere. Use the detailed instructions for at least one installation so you can understand this version. ITC thanks various Local Support Partners for contributing their experience and internal documents to make this possible

  1. Check that system specs meet ISP recommendation
(If the system doesn't meet recommended be sure it meets the MINIMUM specification before you continue.)

    b. 128 MB RAM
    c. SVGA Color monitor with resolution 1024 x 768
    d. Windows 95/98/NT (98 or NT recommended)
    e. Disk space 165 available for s/w install
    f. Internet Explorer v5.0
    g. Netscape v4.5/4.73

  2. Download VPN software - get it from https://www.itc.virginia.edu/cgi-local/vpn/vpn.exe. Each user must individually provide ss# and acknowledge use restrictions.
    a. Windows 95 users need Dial Up Networking 1.3 or better
    b. Dell GX-1 systems with Windows 98 may need network card driver update (some LSP report no problem with GX-1 systems running Windows NT)
    c. The VPN Mapi update is no longer required if you are using the version of the VPN client released 6/15/2001 or later.
    d. Install the VPN software (NT systems must be installed as Administrator)
The reboot at the end of the VPN installation is NOT optional.

  3. Go to www.virginia.edu/integratedsystem and install Oracle Jinitiator, if not already done

  4. Discoverer installation preparation
    a.
Backup up c:\autoexec.bat - Discoverer install changes it and problems will result.
    b. Get latest copy tnsnames.ora from (http://www.virginia.edu/integratedsystem/howdoi/tnsnames.ora )

  5. Install Oracle Discoverer 3.1
    a. If using Windows95 and Windows98 and any of the following exist:
    Delete C:\orawin95\NET80\ADMIN\Sqlnet.ora
    Delete C:\orawin95\NET80\ADMIN\Tnsnames.ora
    Delete C:\orawin95\NETWORK\ADMIN\Sqlnet.ora
    Delete C:\orawin95\NETWORK\ADMIN\Tnsnames.ora

Copy the downloaded version of tnsnames.ora to: C:\orawin95\NET80\ADMIN\tnsnames.ora

    b. If using WindowsNT and any of the following exist:
    Delete C:\oraNT\NET80\ADMIN\Sqlnet.ora
    Delete C:\oraNT\NET80\ADMIN\Tnsnames.ora
    Delete C:\oraNT\NETWORK\ADMIN\Sqlnet.ora
    Delete C:\oraNT\NETWORK\ADMIN\Tnsnames.ora

Copy the downloaded version of tnsnames.ora to: C:\oraNT\NET80\ADMIN\Tnsnames.ora

  6. Fix Autoexec.bat
The installer may have added a line similar to the following:
    PATH C:\orawin95\bin
    If so change it to
    PATH %PATH%;C:\orawin95\bin
Without that change many commands will not be found.

(if you don't have a PATH the Windows 95/98 location for EDIT is C:\windows\command\edit)

  7. Optional - create desktop shortcuts: Launch Oracle to www.virginia.edu/integratedsystem, VPN Connection to c:\program files\cisco systems\client 3000\ipsecdlr.exe and Discoverer User Edition to C:\orawin95……
