Web Mail - Getting Started

Logging In

To access WebMail, go to the website at: http://www.mail.virginia.edu. You will be transferred to the Netbadge login page.

You will use your personal digital certificate, or your U.Va. Computing ID (example: mst3k) and the password from your Central Mail Service (CMS), blue.unix, Home Directory, Eservices or HSC domain account to access NetBadge.

After you login to NetBadge, you will be taken to your email account in Web Mail.

Note that the NetBadge login on-Grounds stays in effect for 9 hours or until you completely exit your browser (Exit/Quit/Close). For this reason, it is critical that you exit all browser windows when you exit WebMail.

Reading Mail

  1. If you prefer, you may change the interface to display text in place of the icons described below.

  2. Upon initial login, the Mailbox "Inbox" window will open. A list of all of your mailboxes (folders) is on the left side of the screen. Note that the Mailboxes tab at the top of the screen is selected, indicating you are currently viewing the contents of a mailbox.

  4. After you have read the message, you may wish to reply, copy or move it to another mailbox, delete it, or forward it to someone else. See below for explanations of each of the tools highlighted in the following image.
  5. Click the "oldest unread" icon (oldest unread) to move to the unread message that has been in your mailbox longest, or select a specific message to read next.

  • For tips on using the Address Book or including attachments with your messages, see the section on Mail Management Tools.

  • WARNING: If you use more than 30 minutes to compose your message, Web Mail will force a logout for your account and you will lose all that you have created. To avoid this difficulty, monitor the time remaining on the message composition screen and click the Reset button if you need additional time to compose your message.

In addition, you may want to create a draft folder and save your underdevelopment message to it periodically. Should you experience a forced logout, you can then login and recover your message from your last saved version.

Logging Out

It is critical that you log out of Web Mail, and then close your browser, when finished with a session. Failure to log out and close your browser will leave your account accessible to the next person who uses the computer. Particularly if you use Web Mail in a public location, logging out and closing your browser will protect you against unauthorized use of your email account. To log out:

  1. Click the "logout" link (logout) which is located at the top right of the Web Mail window.

  2. Close your browser by clicking on File on the menu bar at the top of your window and selecting Exit.
