Download and Install Thunderbird

[Nov 21, 2008 9:49] Login issues with the Central Mail Service have now been resolved.

These instructions are for downloading and installing the Thunderbird email program on either a PC (Windows 2000 or XP) or a Macintosh (OS X).

Requirements

  • This document was written for Thunderbird version 1.5. The information herein may (or may not) apply to other versions of Thunderbird.
  • A live Internet connection via the U.Va. network or an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
  • An account on the U.Va. Central Mail Service or another email server at U.Va. (Create a CMS email account)

Download and Install Thunderbird

  1. Download the Mozilla Thunderbird installation file.
    Download the installation program from the Mozilla website.
  2. Start the Thunderbird installation program.
    Windows: Double click the downloaded file.
    Macintosh: the download will be followed automatically by the install. After the installtion is complete, double click the Thunderbird Disk Image to open it in Finder, and then drag the Thunderbird program onto your Macintosh's HD (hard drive), preferably into the Applications folder. Drag the icon to your Dock if you want it to appear there.
  3. Open File - Security Warning.
    Windows XP users click the Run button (XP Security Window).
  4. Click the Next button to continue through the Welcome Window.
  5. Review the Software License Agreement.
    The Software License Agreement window appears, prompting you to read the license. If you agree to the license, select I Accept..., then click Next and the installation will continue. If you do not agree, select I do NOT Accept..., then click Next and the installation process will end.
  6. Select installation components.
    Choose Standard. Click Next to continue. It is recommended you accept the defaults.
  7. Confirm installation options.
    You are shown the destination folder of the Thunderbird program files and components to be installed; click Next to continue. Click Back to change any of the installation options.
  8. Click Finish to complete the installation.
  9. Configure Thunderbird to access your CMS or blue.unix email account.
