Support Plan for Email Programs (Revised July 2007)

[Nov 21, 2008 9:49] Login issues with the Central Mail Service have now been resolved.

ITC Email Support

Email programs typically change user interface over time. Also over time (the intervals of which are sometimes relatively short) new email programs emerge.

People have differing needs for email, which means that at a given point in time they typically use the email program that best meets their needs (or the needs of their department). As email programs change and needs change, transitioning between email programs is likely. These transitions are required due to evolving technology, to address security concerns and to meet the changing individual and organizational needs.

ITC strives to support email programs in common use here at the University of Virginia in a variety of ways. We provide via the web configuration and sometimes usage information for email programs; we answer questions that arrive at our consult@Virginia.edu and postmaster@Virginia.edu email addresses; we respond to questions received either in person or on the telephone at our Call Center, at our Walk In Clinics, and at computer labs.

Users should understand that their initial contact with us regarding an email problem may not always yield an immediate response. In many cases, referrals to backup support may be necessary in order to effect
a solution.

The following list is ITC's current (July 2007) support plan for email:

  • ITC offers two free email servers: the Central Mail Service (CMS) and unix.mail until such time as unix.mail is retired. unix.mail is on the service retirement list but no retirement date has been announced as yet.
  • ITC offers a for-fee Exchange email server to departments.
  • ITC supports the WebMail interface to the CMS.
  • ITC supports Thunderbird.
  • ITC supports Mail for Mac OS X.
  • ITC supports Mail for Windows.
  • ITC will provide configuration instructions for connecting Outlook and Outlook Express to our mail servers. It should be noted that because these email programs are not being using with an Exchange server, some capabilities available via an Exchange server are not available when these programs are used with our email servers.
  • ITC will continue to support Mulberry, until technical developments render Mulberry no longer tenable or a retirement date is set. Mulberry is on the service retirement list but no retirement date has been announced as yet.
  • ITC will continue to support Eudora until the transition from QualComm to Open Source appears complete, at which time its status will be re-evaluated.
