Configure Thunderbird to Use SMTP Auth

Follow the steps below to configure Thunderbird 1.5 to send email from off-Grounds with SMTP Auth:
  1. Start Thunderbird.
  2. From the Tools menu, choose Account Settings.
  3. Select Server Settings in the left column (under your UVa account).
  4. In the Security Settings section, check the Use secure authentication box.
  5. Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) at the bottom of the left column.
  6. Select the entry that applies to your UVa account and click Edit….
  7. In the Settings section, in the Server Name field,…
    • …for a CMS account, type: cms.mail.virginia.edu
    • …for a unix.mail account, type: smtp.mail.virginia.edu
  8. In the Security and Authentication section, check the Use name and password box.
  9. Type your computing ID (e.g., mst3k) in the User Name field.
  10. Select the TLS, if available radio button in the Use Secure Connection field.
  11. Click OK to save.
  12. Click OK again to exit.

If Port 25 Is Blocked

Port 25 is used by default to send email messages. However, to prevent spam from being routed through their email servers, your ISP may not allow the use of port 25. In this case, follow the steps below to change your sending email port designation:

  1. Start Thunderbird.
  2. From the Tools menu, choose Account Settings.
  3. Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) at the bottom of the left column.
  4. Select the entry that applies to your UVa account and click Edit….
    1. Type 587 in the Port field.
    2. Click OK to save.
  5. Click OK again to exit.
