Configure Mac OS X Mail to Use SMTP Auth

Follow the steps below to configure Mac OS X Mail to send email from off-Grounds with SMTP Auth:
  1. Open Mac OS X Mail.
  2. From the Mail menu, choose Preferences.
  3. Click the Accounts icon.
  4. Click the Account Information tab.
  5. From Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP),…
    • …for a CMS account, select: cms.mail.virginia.edu
    • …for a unix.mail account, select: smtp.mail.virginia.edu
  6. Click the Server Settings….
  7. Check the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) box.
  8. Select Password from the Authentication drop-down box.
  9. Type your email ID in the User Name: field.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Close the Accounts window.
  12. Click Save to save the changes that you made.

If Port 25 Is Blocked

Port 25 is used by default to send email messages. However, to prevent spam from being routed through their email servers, your ISP may not allow the use of port 25. In this case, follow the steps below to change your sending email port designation:

  1. Open Mac OS X Mail.
  2. From the Mail menu, choose Preferences.
  3. Click the Accounts icon.
  4. Click the Account Information tab.
  5. Click Server Settings….
  6. Type 587 in the Server Port field.
  7. Click OK to save and exit the Accounts window.
