How to Register for Electronic Mail at U.Va.

To learn more about registering for electronic mail at U.Va., choose the appropriate category based on what you have and what you need.

Information on how to register an individual id

If you have instructions on how to register for electronic mail on the computer system you are using at U.Va., you should use that method to try to register your address. Departmental systems sometimes have a method that must be used with the computers in the department, so if you have an account on a departmental computer system, check with the system administrator of that system to see if there is a particular process you should use.

Register a generic id

If you have a generic id, perhaps for an organization or project, the only way to register this id is to compose an electronic mail message to postmaster@Virginia.edu and ask the electronic mail postmaster to register your id. The postmaster will need to know the generic id and the full name of the computer where the generic id is found.

General information on how to register

While each computer system at U.Va. usually provides a method by which people can register themselves for electronic mail, the following method should work for all members of the U.Va. community, regardless of the mail system they are using, as long as they know their full local electronic mail address.

To be able to use the registered electronic mail address:

U.Va._Computing_ID@Virginia.edu

and have messages sent to this address automatically redirected to a local mailbox whose address is similar to:

email_address@computer.name.Virginia.edu

or

email_address@aol.com

use the mail registration form at the following address:

https://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/email/register

It should also be noted that those who are present members of the U.Va. community can choose to register a non-U.Va. address, using the above process, taking care that their non-U.Va. address and domain are specified correctly in the registration form.

If you have an account on a U.Va. email server and an account at another Internet Service Provider (ISP), before you register the non-U.Va. ISP account, please keep in mind that some non-U.Va. addresses are not allocated as much storage space as U.Va. accounts are allowed nor can they receive messages as large as can be received in a U.Va. account. Also remember that if you have an account on a U.Va. email server and a non-U.Va. ISP, and you choose to register the non-U.Va. ISP account, you should also establish an auto-forward from your U.Va. account to the non-U.Va. ISP to insure that you do not ignore important messages that are sent only to your U.Va. address. Information about forwarding your email from ITC email servers is available on the web page at:

http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/email/
under "Forwarding" in the left menu.
