NOTE: When working in Pine, the term select usually implies that you choose an option from a menu by typing a key and then pressing the Enter key or that you use the arrow keys (also called cursor keys) on your keyboard (usually followed by pressing the Enter key to highlight something on your screen.

Introduction

When working with the Pine email client on an ITC Unix System or on the Central Mail Service, you may sometimes find it necessary to display the full headers of one or more of the messages in your INBOX. With full headers, you see not only the normal Date:, From:, To:, and Subject: headers, but also headers that show the Message ID as well as the Received: headers that indicate how the message was transmitted from sender to you. The process of what you need to do to display full headers is not difficult, but requires several steps:

  • Establish a connection to the computer system where your account resides
  • Login
  • Invoke Pine
  • Configure Pine to enable the display of full headers - this process may need to be done only once depending on which email server you are accessing
  • Open your INBOX or the folder from which you want to redirect messages, enable full header display and view the messages for which you want to see the full headers

Configuring Pine

After you have connected, logged in and invoked Pine, you are ready to change your Pine configurations.

From the main Pine menu you are offered choices for:

H HELP - Get help using Pine
C COMPOSE MESSAGE - Compose and send/post a message
I MESSAGE INDEX - View messages in current folder
L FOLDER LIST - Select a folder OR news group to view
A ADDRESS BOOK - Update address book
S SETUP - Configure Pine Options
Q QUIT - Leave the Pine program
You will want to select S for Setup.

You will then see, at the bottom of your screen, a prompt that says:

Choose a setup task from the menu below :
and a menu that looks similar to:

? Help E Exit Setup N Newpassword S Signature L collectionList
O Other CMDS P Printer C Config A AddressBooks R Rules K Kolor

You will want to select C for Config (configure).

You will next see a list of configurations you can change. Be very careful here: you want to change only the configuration that has to do with full headers, and if you change other configurations, Pine may not work in the way that you expect. You want to find the option that says:

enable-full-header-cmd

This option is usually several screens down in the list of Pine options. Depending on what version of Pine you are using, they may be under the "category" called Advanced Command Preferences in the "feature list" part of the configuration menu.

Scroll down a page at a time, using the SPACE BAR, until you see this option.

Use the N key to scroll down until you have highlighted the option.

  • If there is an X in the box in front of the words, the option is set.
  • If there is no X in the box in front of the words:

    • Type X to set the option.

Type E to exit the configuration setup. When you are asked:

Commit changes ("Yes" replaces settings, "No" abandons changes)?
type y and you will be returned to the Pine main menu.

Displaying Full Headers

After you have configured Pine to display full headers for messages, you can see the full headers for a single message by:

  • Selecting the INBOX/folder that contains the message whose headers you want to see
  • Select the message you whose headers you want to see
  • Display the full headers by typing the command:
    h

Note that typing a second h while displaying a message turns the display of full headers off.
