Bouncing One or More Messages

NOTE: When working in Pine, the term select usually implies that you choose an option from a menu by typing a key and then pressing the Enter key or that you use the arrow keys (also called cursor keys) on your keyboard (usually followed by pressing the Enter key to highlight something on your screen.

Introduction

When working with the Pine email client on an ITC Unix System or on the Central Mail Service, you may sometimes find it necessary to redirect (or "bounce") one or more messages to another email address. Bouncing is used instead of forwarding when you want to preserve the header information present in the message being redirected. The process of what you need to do is not difficult, but requires several steps:

  • Establish a connection to the computer system where your account resides
  • Login
  • Invoke Pine
  • Configure Pine to enable the bounce command and to enable the aggregate command - this process may need to be done only once depending on which email server you are accessing
  • Open your INBOX or the folder from which you want to redirect messages, select the messages to be redirected, and bounce the message(s) that need to go elsewhere

Configuring Pine

After you have connected, logged in and invoked Pine, you are ready to change your Pine configurations.

From the main Pine menu you are offered choices for:

H

HELP

- Get help using Pine

C

COMPOSE MESSAGE

- Compose and send/post a message

I

MESSAGE INDEX

- View messages in current folder

L

FOLDER LIST

- Select a folder OR news group to view

A

ADDRESS BOOK

- Update address book

S

SETUP

- Configure Pine Options

Q

QUIT

- Leave the Pine program

You will want to select S for Setup.

You will then see, at the bottom of your screen, a prompt that says:

Choose a setup task from the menu below :
and a menu that looks similar to:

? Help

E Exit Setup

N Newpassword

S Signature

L collectionList

O Other CMDS

P Printer

C Config

A AddressBooks

R Rules

K Kolor

You will want to select C for Config (configure).

You will next see a list of configurations you can change. Be very careful here: you want to change only the configuration that has to do with bounces, and if you change other configurations, Pine may not work in the way that you expect. You are looking for two options. One is labelled:

enable-aggregate-command-set
and the other is labelled:
enable-bounce-cmd
These are usually found near each other and may be several screens down in the list of Pine options. Depending on what version of Pine you are using, they may be under the "category" called Advanced Command Preferences .

Scroll down a page at a time, using the SPACE BAR, until you see these options.

Look at the first option (enable-aggregate-command-set).

  • If there is an X in the box in front of the words, the option is set and you can go to the next option (enable-bounce-cmd).
  • If there is no X in the box in front of the words:

    • Use the N key to scroll down until you have highlighted the option.
    • Type X to set the option.
Look at the second option (enable-bounce-cmd).
  • If there is an X in the box in front of the words, the option is set and you can exit Setup
  • If there is no X in the box in front of the words:

    • Use the N key to scroll down until you have highlighted the option.
    • Type X to set the option.

Type E to exit the configuration setup. When you are asked:

Commit changes ("Yes" replaces settings, "No" abandons changes)?
Type y and you will be returned to the Pine main menu.

Bouncing One or More Messages

After you have configured Pine to bounce messages, bouncing a single message to another address is not difficult. You will:

  • Display the INBOX/folder that contains the messages to be redirected
  • Select the messages to be redirected
  • Apply your selections so that the bounce command will work on everything you have selected
  • Use the Bounce command to send the messages to another account.

  1. To display the INBOX or folder that contains the messages to be redirected, from the main Pine menu, select:

    L

    FOLDER LIST

    - Select a folder OR news group to view

    and then select:

    INBOX

or select the name of the folder whose messages you want to redirect.

The messages in your mailbox will be displayed and may look something like:

    PINE 4.05

  2. After you see the messages in your INBOX, to select the messages that you want to redirect to another account, you will:

    Type the ; (semi-colon) key.

You will be prompted to select the messages you want to redirect:

    C [select Cur]

    D Date

    S Status

    In the above:

C       selects just the current message - whatever message is highlighted
N       allows you to select a range of messages by their number. You are prompted:

Enter comma-delimited list of numbers (dash between ranges):

    ^G Help

    ^C Cancel

    Ret Accept

To select message numbers 1 and 3, type:

    1,3
    and press the Enter key.

To select message numbers 1 through 3, type:

    1-3
    and press the Enter key.

Please be aware that there are limits on how many messages you scan redirect within a given period of time, so try to select 25 or fewer each session.

  1. After you have selected the messages you want to redirect, you will need to apply your selection, by using the Apply command.

    Type:

          a

to cause the command you will use next to be applied to all the messages you have selected.

  1. After you have selected the messages you want to redirect, and have applied your selection, you may send them to another account using the Bounce command.

If you want full headers to be sent with the messages, type:

          h

to enable full headers. Note: this selection is optional but will maintain all relevant email headers, which can be important in some situations.

    Type:

          b

to begin the bounce/redirect message process.

    You will be prompted:

          BOUNCE (redirect) message to :

Type the email address you want to receive the messages,
press the key marked Enter ,
and the message(s) you have selected will be sent to the address you specify.
