Getting Started
These instructions are for downloading, installing, and configuring the Mulberry 3.1.6 email program on either a PC (Windows XP or Vista) or a Macintosh (OS X) computer. ITC will continue to support Mulberry until a retirement date is set or it ceases to work.

Requirements
You must have an account on the UVa Central Mail Service (CMS) or another email server at UVa (create a CMS email account).
Download and Install Mulberry
- Download the Mulberry 3.1.6 installation file and installation instructions.
Download the installation program and installation instructions from the Software Central website. If needed, print the installation instructions. - Start the Mulberry 3.1.6 installation program.
Follow the installation instructions to install the program.
Required UVa Configurations
The configurations in this section are required to make Mulberry work in a secure fashion.
Configuring Mulberry to work with your server
[an error occurred while processing this directive]If your email account is on the CMS, the server configuration information in Mulberry is correct.
To change your information, or if you account is not on the CMS, you will need to configure Mulberry to use the setting for your account:
- From the Mulberry File menu, choose Preferences….
- On the right side of the screen, beneath the Cancel button, click Simple.
- Supply the non-CMS values for your email account.
- Click the OK button.
TLS with Mulberry 3.1.6 and the CMS (Security)
You can use TLS (Transport Layer Security) to protect the privacy of entire email sessions. TLS encrypts the information that is transmitted while you are connected to your CMS account, including the username and password you use to log in.
- In Mulberry, choose Preferences:
- Macintosh: from the Mulberry menu.
- Windows: from the File menu.
- Select the Advanced radio button.
- Click the Accounts tab.
- Select IMAP CMS from the Account dropdown box.
- In the Server field, type: cms.mail.virginia.edu.
- From the Method dropdown box, select Plain Text.
- Type your computing ID (e.g., mst3k) in the User field.
- Leave the boxes to Save User ID and Save Password unchecked.
- Select STARTTLS-TLSv1 from the Secure: drop down box.
- Click OK to save your changes.

Three-pane View
This documentation assumes you are using a three-pane layout.
- In Mulberry, choose Window:
- Macintosh: from the Mulberry menu.
- Windows: from the File menu.
- Click Layout….
- Click Use 3-pane Window.
- In Mulberry, choose Window:
- Macintosh: from the Mulberry menu.
- Windows: from the File menu.
- Click Layout….
- Click List Vertical.
- In Mulberry, choose Window:
- Macintosh: from the Mulberry menu.
- Windows: from the File menu.
- Click Show Preview.
Address Book Configuration
- In Mulberry, click the Contacts tab in the Server pane.
- Click the
button next to address.
The default address book is a single address book, named with your login ID (example: mst3k). - Click the three diamonds to the left of your address book.
Clicking the diamonds enables 1) automatic opening of address books on startup of Mulberry, 2) expansion of nicknames when addressing a message, and 3) use of the address book when you search for an email address. - Click the Mail tab in the Server pane.
The diamonds will need to be clicked each time you create a new address book.
LDAP Configuration
To have Mulberry try to automatically expand the addresses (either name or email address) of anyone at UVa, you must configure Mulberry to use the LDAP directory that lists all current UVa people with active UVa accounts. Searches with LDAP from Mulberry can be slow, so consider whether or not you want to use this feature before configuring it.
- In Mulberry, choose Preferences:
- Macintosh: from the Mulberry menu.
- Windows: from the File menu.
- Click on the Advanced radio button.
- Select the Accounts tab.
- For Account: select LDAP.
- Click the Options tab within the Accounts tab..
- Click Use with Address Expansion.
- Click the OK button.
SMTPAUTH with Mulberry 3.1.6 and the CMS
- In Mulberry, choose Preferences…,
- Macintosh: from the Mulberry menu.
- Windows: from the File menu.
- Click on the Advanced radio button.
- Select the Accounts tab.
- Select SMTP from the Account dropdown box.
- In the Server field,…
- …for a CMS account, type: cms.mail.virginia.edu
- …for a unix.mail account, type: smtp.mail.virginia.edu
- Click the Authenticate tab.
- From the Method dropdown box, select Plain Text.
- Type your computing ID (e.g., mst3k) in the User field.
- Leave the boxes to save User ID and Save Password unchecked.
- Select STARTTLS-TLSv1 from the Secure: dropdown box.
- Click the OK button to save your changes.
SMTPAUTH If Port 25 Is Blocked
Port 25 is used by default to send email messages. However, to prevent spam from being routed through their email servers, your ISP may not allow the use of port 25. In this case, follow the steps below to change your sending email port designation.
- In Mulberry, choose Preferences…
- Macintosh: from the Mulberry menu.
- Windows: from the File menu.
- Click on the Advanced radio button.
- Select the Accounts tab.
- Select SMTP from the Account dropdown box.
- From the Server field,…
- …for a CMS account, type: cms.mail.virginia.edu:587
- …for a unix.mail account, type: smtp.mail.virginia.edu:587
- Click the OK button to save your changes.
Setting a Signature
- In Mulberry, choose Preferences….
- Macintosh: from the Mulberry menu.
- Windows: from the File menu.
- Click on the Simple radio button.
- Click the Signature button.
- Enter your signature information into the Dialog box.
- Click the OK button to save your changes.
New Mail Alert Options
- In Mulberry, choose Preferences…
- Macintosh: from the Mulberry menu.
- Windows: from the File menu.
- Click on the Simple radio button.
- Under Check for New Mail, uncheck the box next to Use Alert.
- Click on the OK button to save your changes..
