Subscribe to a Mailman Mailing List

To subscribe to a Mailman mailing list at the University of Virginia, the Mailman list information for your list can be found at a web site whose location is similar to:

http://list.mail.virginia.edu/mailman/listinfo/list_name

In the above, replace list_name with the name of the list whose information page you want to visit.

Complete the Subscribing to Webmail-comments section and click on the Subscribe button.

Depending on how the list is configured:

  • You will receive an email message from mailman-owner@list.mail.virginia.edu that provides a web site for you to visit to confirm that you want to be a member of the list.
  • The list owner will receive notification via an email message from mailman-owner@list.mail.virginia.edu that you want to subscribe to the list and will either allow the subscription to take place or deny you membership in the list.
  • The list owner will receive notification via an email message from mailman-owner@list.mail.virginia.edu that you want to subscribe to the list. If the list owner allows the subscription, you will receive an email message from mailman-owner@list.mail.virginia.edu that provides a web site for you to visit to confirm that you want to be a member of the list.

After you have become a member of a list, you will usually (again, depending on how the list owner has configured the list) receive another email message that tells you your list password as well as the web address providing the member options configuration form. Depending on how the list is configured, you may receive this same message once per month, as a reminder. If you subscribe to more than one list using the same email address, you will receive only one of these messages each month. If you subscribe to multiple lists using a variety of email addresses, you will receive one of these messages for each email address you have used.

Mailman List Member Options

Members of Mailman lists at the University of Virginia have the ability to set several options for how messages directed to them via a list of which they are a member. What options are available for a particular list will vary depending on how the list owner has configured the list. After you have visited the member configuration form and have configured your membership as you want, remember to click the Logout button at the top of the page and then close your browser to prevent others from having access to your list configuration page.

Member options may be configured by visiting the Mailman mailing list member configuration form for your list. The web address for this form will be similar to:

https://list.mail.virginia.edu/mailman/options/list_name/email_address

where list_name is the name of the list of which you are a member and email_address is your email address as it appears on the list.

You will be required to login to change any of your options. If you have forgotten your password, you can request that it be sent to you via email.

When you have completed setting your options, click the Submit Your Changes button to have the settings saved.

Available list member options are:

Change subscriber address.
A confirmation email will be sent to the new address you provide, and must be confirmed within 3 days for the change to take effect.

Click the unsubscribe button on the member configuration form to remove yourself from the list permanently.

View your other mailing list subscriptions.
Click the List my other subscriptions button to view a list of all the other mailing lists at list.mail.virginia.edu of which you are a member with the same email address used in this list subscription. Use this option if you want to make the same membership option changes to other subscriptions.

Change list subscription options:
Current values for each of the options below will show as checked. Note that some of the options have a Set globally checkbox. Checking this field will cause the changes to be made to every mailing list that you are a member of on list.mail.virginia.edu that uses the same email address used in subscribing to this list.

  • Mail delivery:
Default setting is enabled, which means you will receive messages posted to this mailing list. Set it to disabled if you want to stay subscribed, but don't want mail delivered to you for a while (e.g. you're going on vacation). If you disable mail delivery, don't forget to re-enable it when you come back; it will not be automatically re-enabled.
  • Digest mode:
Default setting is off. If you turn digest mode on, you'll get posts bundled together (usually one per day but possibly more on busy lists), instead of singly when they're sent.
  • Default setting is Plain Text. If you enable digest mode, and the digest contains attachments that appear to be gibberish, using MIME mode will help you read the attachments.
  • Receive your own posts to the list:
Default setting is yes, which means you will get a copy of every message you post to the list. If you don't want to receive this copy, set this option to no.
  • Acknowledgement when you mail to list:
Default setting is no. Set this option to yes to receive an automatic acknowledgement that your message has been successfully received by the list.
  • Monthly password reminder:
Default setting is yes, which sends a single email to you each month containing the name and password for each list to which you are subscribed. You can turn this off on a per-list basis by selecting no for this option. If you turn off password reminders for all the lists to which you are subscribed, no reminder email will be sent to you.
  • Conceal your address from subscriber list;
Default setting is no, which means when someone views the list membership, your email address is shown (in an obscured fashion to thwart spam harvesters). If you want to hide your email address from other list members, select yes for this option.
  • Topic categories:
List topics, a method of sorting list messages by subject, must be defined by the list owner. If none are defined, the ability for list members to subscribe to specific list topics or filter mail based on topics is disabled. By default, no topics are defined for lists.
  • Avoid duplicate messages:
Default setting is yes, which means when you are listed explicitly in the To: or Cc: headers of a list message, as well as subscribed as a member of the list, you will not receive another copy from the mailing list. Set this option to no to receive all copies of the message.

Remember to click the Submit Your Changes button to have the settings saved.
