This page provides instructions for configuring the Mail for Macintosh email program for Mac OS X to use IMAP (Internet Mail Access Protocol) with University of Virginia accounts.
Requirements
Minimum operating system levels for this document are:- Mac OS X 10.2.x users should be at Mac OS X 10.2.8.
- Mac OS X 10.3.x users should be at Mac OS X 10.3.9.
- Mac OS X 10.4.x users should be at Mac OS X 10.4.7 (as of 08/24/2006).
Warnings
- As Mac OS X evolves, certain items may have a slightly different name or look than those shown. The function of these items will be the same. If you have an earlier version of Mac OS X, ITC recommends you upgrade to the current version.
Configure Mail for Mac OS X to use IMAP
- Open Mac OS X Mail.
Click the Finder icon
in your Doc (the bar at the bottom of the screen).
- Click the Applications folder in the left side bar.
- Click the Mac OS X Mail icon

If you have never used Mail for Macintosh before, a window will pop up asking you for the settings for your account; please go to the next step (step 4). If you have used Mail for Macintosh before and need to configure it for your U.Va. account, please:
- Click Mail on the menu bar and then select Preferences.
- Click the Accounts icon
at the top of
the Mail preferences window. - If needed, click on the Account Information tab.
- Select IMAP from the Account Type drop-down menu.
- Type virginia.edu into the Account Description field.
- Type your full name, nickname, or whatever you prefer into the Full Name field. This is the name that will appear in your From: line on messages.
- Type your email address into the Email Address field. If you have an email alias, you may use the alias instead of your email address.
- Click Continue.
- Find the name for your Incoming Mail
Server and Outgoing Mail Server.
- For a Central Mail Service account,
find the name of your Incoming Mail server by:
- Going to WebMail.
- Logging in.
- Clicking on the Settings tab.
- Under Client Settings (located on the left side of the page), click on Other Clients and the name of your Incoming and Outgoing mail servers will be displayed. Make a note of your IMAP values.
- Logout.
- For a blue.Unix account, your Incoming Mail Server is unix.mail.virginia.edu and your Outgoing Mail Server is smtp.mail.virginia.edu.
- For a Central Mail Service account,
find the name of your Incoming Mail server by:
- Type your Email ID (example: mst3k) after User Name.
- Type your email password after Password.
- Click Continue.
- Type in the name of your Outgoing Mail Server.
- If present, leave Use Authentication blank.
- If present, leave Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) blank.
- Click Continue or OK.
- If present, review the Account Summary to insure your information is correct.
- Click Continue.
- Click Done.
- If you are presented with a window asking you to import mailboxes, click No.
- At the welcome screen, if you would like to see the new features of Mac OS X Mail click Yes, otherwise click No.
