Creating a "vacation" message when you are away from email

If you are going to be away from email for a while, you may want to create a message tha will be sent once-a week to anyone who sends you an email message while you are away. This message is often called a "vacation" message. When you return to email, you will want to remove the vacation message.

Eudora has a vacation message feature, but it works only if your computer is connected to the network and you are running Eudora. Alternatively, both the Central Mail Service (CMS) and unix.mail offer a vacation message service which do not depend on your connection to the network or Eudora running.

If your email account is located on the Central Mail Service (CMS), you can create a vacation message by:

  • Visiting the web site at:

    http://config.mail.virginia.edu

  • Logging in with your U.Va. Computing ID (example: mst3k ) and password
  • Choosing the option that has to do with Enable Vacation Mail
Remember to visit the web site when you return to remove the vacation message.

If your email account is located on the unix.mail server, you can create a vacation message by:

  • Establishing a secure telnet session to:
    blue.unix.virginia.edu
  • Logging in with your U.Va. Computing ID (example: mst3k ) and password
  • From the Umenu Menu, selecting:

    System Customization

    Mail prefrences

    Enable the vacation program

and then responding to the prompts you see.

Remember to visit the web site when you return to remove the vacation message.
