Receiving messages

Eudora allows you to check for messages manually or automatically.

Check mail manually:

  1. From the File menu, choose Check Mail, or select the icon Check Mail icon.
  2. If Eudora asks for your password, type it in the Password dialog box and click OK.
  3. If there is no mail for you, a "no mail" alert appears. Click OK.
  4. If you have new mail, Eudora transfers the messages one by one and then displays a "new mail" alert. Click OK.
New messages are delivered to the In mailbox of your <Dominant> personality, unless they are filtered into a designated mailbox. (Click here to learn about filtering) The mailboxes with new messages will open automatically and the new messages will be added to the end of the mailbox list.

Note: To view the complete header information of a message click on the the Show All Headers icon Show All Headers icon.

PC - Check mail automatically:

  1. From the Tools menu choose Options. Then select the Checking Mail category icon Checking Mail Category icon.
  2. Click the checkbox for Check for mail every __ minutes to turn on automatic mail checking. In the text box type the number of minutes between automatic mail checks (15 is the recommended interval, more often may overload the server).
  3. To save your changes and close the Options window, select OK.

Mac - Check mail automatically:

    1. From the Special menu choose Settings. Then select the Checking Mail category icon Checking Mail Category icon.
    2. Click the checkbox for Check for mail every __ minutes to turn on automatic mail checking. In the text box type the number of minutes between automatic mail checks (15 is the recommended interval, more often may overload the server).
    3. To save your changes and close the Special window, select OK.

Reading a message

To read a message that you've received, select it and read it in the bottom pane or double-click it to open it.

Replying to a message

PC

  1. Choose or open the message to which you want to reply.
  2. Choose Reply from the Message menu, or select the icon Compose icon, which will open a new composition window containing the original message. Eudora completes the To, From and Subject fields based on the original message.
  3. Remove those parts of the original text that you don't want to include in your reply and type in your own text.
  4. When you finish your response, select Send from the toolbar at the top right of the composition window.
  5. If you opened the message you are replying to, close it by clicking on the X button in the top right corner of the message window or selecting Close from the File menu.

Mac

  1. Choose or open the message you want to reply to.
  5. If you opened the message you are replying to, close it by clicking on the close box in the top left corner of the message window or selecting Close from the File menu.

Note: There is also a feature for Replying to All, which will send the reply to all of the original recipients of the message. This should be used carefully since it can lead to accidently sending replies to numerous people, many of whom don't need to see them.

Forwarding a message

    1. Choose or open the message to which you want to reply.
    2. Choose Forward from the Message menu, or select the icon Forward icon, which will open a new composition window containing the original message, including header information. Eudora completes the Subject field based on the original message.
    3. Type the addresses of the people you want to forward the message to in the To field.
    4. The existing text may be edited, and more text may be added to the message.
    5. After editing the message, select Send to forward it.

Redirecting a message

Eudora's Redirect feature lets you pass on a received message that was intended for someone else, allowing that person to reply directly to the original sender.

  1. Choose or open the message to which you want to reply.
  2. Choose Redirect from the Message menu, which will open a new composition window containing the original message, including header information. Eudora completes the From field with the address of the originator, followed in parentheses by the words "by way of" and your name and/or email address. The Subject field is also completed based on the original message.
  3. Type the addresses of the people you want to redirect the message to in the To field.
  4. The existing text may be edited, and more text may be added to the message.
  5. Once the editing is complete, select Send.

Note: Email courtesy suggests that you not edit the message you're redirecting. If you must add comments, put them in brackets [ ] with your initials, like this: [Don: Please reply to this right away. SD]

Composing a message

    1. Choose New Message from the Message menu or select the icon New Message icon.
    2. Type an email address in the To field.
    3. Press Tab to move the cursor to the Subject field.
    4. Type the subject of your message (optional, but recommended).
    5. Press Tab to move to each field. The Cc (carbon copy) and Bcc (blind carbon copy) fields are optional. Addresses entered in the BCC field will not appear in the message sent.
    6. Press Tab and type in the body of the message.
    7. To save a copy of the message in your Out mailbox, click on the Keep Copies icon Keep Copies icon in the center of the toolbar at the top of the Compose window. Eudora will keep copies by default until you toggle the icon.
    8. After completing the message click Send, or select Save from the File menu to save it in the Out mailbox without sending it.

PC - Note: The message can be opened from the Out mailbox and edited at any time prior to sending it, and will not be sent automatically. The option to keep copies of outgoing mail can be turned off by selecting Composing Mail from the Tools, Options menu and clicking on the checkbox to uncheck Keep Copies.

Mac - Note: The message can be opened from the Out mailbox and edited at any time prior to sending it, and will not be sent automatically. The option to keep copies of outgoing mail can be turned off by selecting Composing Mail from the Special, Settings menu and clicking on the checkbox to uncheck Keep Copies of Outgoing Mail.

Tip: You can type multiple addresses in the To, Cc and Bcc fields, as long as they are separated with a comma.

Printing a message

To print a message, select it and then select Print from the File menu, or select the icon Print icon. Eudora automatically prints headers and footers on each page, giving the window title, page number, and your return address.

Saving a message

Messages are kept in their mailboxes until you delete them, and it is possible to save messages that are not completed by selecting Save from the File menu, which puts them into the Out mailbox until you are ready to complete and send them.

To save a message to your IMAP sentmail folder, create a filter that sends a copy of all outgoing mail with any header to the Sentmail folder.

Deleting a message

To delete a message select it and either press the Delete key on the keyboard, or select Delete from the Message menu. If the message hasn't been sent a warning dialog box will pop up. The message will be placed in the Trash folder but not removed from the IMAP server. To remove it from the server select Purge Messages from the Messages menu.

It is important to periodically (monthly or bi-monthly) check your Sentmail folder on the IMAP server and delete unwanted messages, since it can fill up quickly with messages that you don't necessarily want or need to save.
