Using blue.unix and Pine to access your CMS mailbox

To access your Central Mail Service (CMS) mailbox using Pine:

Establish a secure telnet session to blue.unix.virginia.edu

You will need to have access to a secure telnet program to connect to blue.unix.virginia.edu. For Windows computers, we recommend that you use Secure CRT. For Macintosh compusters, we recommend that you use Secure telnet for Mac OS X The name of the computer to which you will connect is blue.unix.virginia.edu.

Login to your blue.unix account

After you have connected to blue.unix, you will be prompted to login. Use your U.Va. Computing ID (example: mst3k) and password to login to your account.

Unix command line prompt and Umenu

If, when you log on to blue.unix, you see the Unix command line prompt, which is similar to:

node14 /home/mst3k $

you are ready to proceed. If, instead, you see a screen similar to:

UVa's Unix Menu System (Umenu)
1) Electronic Mail  
2) Electronic News (e.g., USENET news)
3) UVa Computing News (ITC News)
4) File Management (view, edit, delete, print, up/download files)
5) User Information (whois)
6) System Customization (disable Umenu, mail reg, home page)
7) Umenu Reference Manual  
8) Internet Services (library services, telnet, etc.)
9) Go to UNIX (type exit to return to Umenu)
10) On line Information (hints, short courses, documents, other help)
11) Run Ovid (Medline & Current Contents)
12) Cluster Commands (gather, fmail, file restore)
x) Exit Umenu/logout  


then you are using the Umenu system. You will need to exit Umenu to use the commands. To exit Umenu, select option 9 Go to Unix. After exiting Umenu, you should see the Unix line prompt, which is similar to:

node14 /home/mst3k $

After using the commands that must be entered from the Unix command line prompt, you can return to Umenu by using the command:

exit

Remember to press the Enter (or Return) key after typing the command.

If needed, synchronize your blue.unix and CMS configuration and addressbooks - required at least once before first accessing CMS mailbox from Pine on blue.unix.

If this is the first time you are accessing your CMS account using Pine from blue.unix, or if you need to resynchronize your CMS addressbooks between blue.unix and the CMS, you will need to use some commands to insure that your CMS configuration and addressbooks are the same between blue.unix and the CMS.

First Time Access to CMS From blue.unix

The first time you access your CMS mailbox using Pine from blue.unix, you will need to rebuild on blue.unix your CMS configuration and addressbooks. This command needs to be run only once, and only before you access your CMS mailbox from blue.unix the first time. From the Unix command line prompt, use the command:

buildcmspine

to accomplish this task. Remember to press the EnterReturn) key after typing the command.

Synchronize CMS and blue.unix Pine addressbooks

If you use Pine access to your CMS mailbox through blue.unix only occasionally, you will want to sychronize your addressbooks on blue.unix to insure that they are current with your CMS addressbooks. To synchronize your blue.unix and CMS addressbooks, from the Unix command line promit, use the command:

buildcmsaddr

Invoke Pine

From the Unix command line, use the command: pine to start Pine.

If you are using Umenu, you will use option 1) Electronic Mail to start Pine.

Login to the CMS

You will be connected to your mailbox on the CMS. For security reasons, you are required to enter your CMS password to access your account there.

Process your email

After logging on to the CMS, you can process the messages on your CMS account using the easy to use, menu-driven, text-based e-mail interface that is available through Pine.
