The Central Mail Service Tools Menu
The Central Mail Service (CMS) has a menu that will allow you to:
There are two ways to access this menu.
- You may visit the web site at:
http://config.mail.virginia.edu
or
- you may establish a secure telnet connection to:
config.mail.virginia.edu
Telnet is a computer program that is used to connect from your own
computer to a remote computer that could be in the next room or across
the country. You "tell the network" where you want to go and, if everything
works correctly, you are connected to the computer that you want to
access. How secure telnet is started on a computer depends on the
type of computer (Mac/PC) and on the operating system that you use.
A secure version of telnet encrypts your communication to protect
the information you send over the network. Information on the secure
telnet clients that are available to members of the U.Va. community
can be found at the web site at: http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/security/clients.html
You may contact the ITC Help Desk at (434) 924-3731 between 8 a.m.
and 5 p.m., Monday - Friday, University holidays excepted, or send
e-mail to: consult@Virginia.edu to determine if you have a secure
telnet program on your machine, how to obtain a copy if you do not,
and how to use the program after you have it installed.
After you have made the connection to the Central Mail Service via the
web or via secure telnet, you can choose from one of the options available
on the menu that you find.
Mail Reading
Use PINE to read your mail
At the present time, this option is available only via the secure telnet
connection to config.mail.virginia.edu. Pine (University of Washington's
"Program for Internet News and Email") is a text-based electronic mail
program which you can use to read, write, and manage e-mail. Using Pine,
you can read the mail that resides in the mailbox you usually access
using Mulberry. This is especially useful if you are reading your
e-mail from home over a slow modem connection, or if you are using a
computer that does not have Mulberry installed on it. If you run Pine
using your current CMS configuration, you will have access to all of
the folders you created in Mulberry.
Obtain information about using Pine to read and send
e-mail.
Configuration Options
Mail forwarding (unforwarding)
This option allows you to forward all your CMS mail to another mailing
address. You will want to do this if you have another account registered
as your default e-mail address. To forward mail, select this option
and type in the complete address of the account from which
you will be reading mail (e.g., mst3k@unix.mail.virginia.edu,and
not just
mst3k@virginia.edu).
Initialize Mulberry Options
This option will set your Mulberry options to their initial,
default settings. (For example, the option to save outgoing mail will
not be turned on.) Choosing this option will not affect the contents of
your mailbox, but you will lose any message groups you have created. In
other words, your mail will all be there, but it may not be sorted the
way it was before you chose this option.
Choose this option only if you have changed your Mulberry Options,
are unhappy with the changes, and are unable to repair them on your own;
or if you are having problems with your configuration.
Change password
The change password option allows you to change your CMS password. When
you select this option, you will be asked to type your old password, then
to enter a new password. The new password will be checked to make sure
it meets all password security requirements.
If the password meets the requirements, you will be asked to re-type it
for verification; if it does not meet the requirements, you will be prompted
to try again. To make the process easier, have a few possible passwords
ready to try. After the new password has been accepted, you will use the
new password when you log in to your account. You should continue to try
to reset your password until you successfully set it: abandoning this
process before you set a password can cause complications with your account.
Enable (Disable) CMS Vacation Mail
The vacation mail option allows you to inform the people that send you
e-mail that you will be away from your mail for a period of time. People
that send you e-mail will get an automatic reply that you set to inform
them that you have received the message, but will not be able to answer
it for a while. The response is delivered to each person who sends a message
to you once a week.
NOTE: After you have enabled vacation mail, you will see an
option on the main menu to disable this program or to update your vacation
message.
System Information
Configuration Information for IMAP programs other than Mulberry
This option will give you the settings you will need to know to configure
email clients other than Mulberry to connect to your CMS account.
This section informs you as to the exact name of the Central Mail Service
server that contains your email messages (e.g., if you have the U.Va.
Computing Id mst3k, then your mail server is m.mail.virginia.edu);
this information is used at times in troubleshooting or re-configuring
your Mulberry software.
Get CMS Quota Information
Users of the CMS are currently not limited in the number or size of incoming
mail folders they store on the Central Mail Service (CMS). However, there
are limits on stored folders. This option will tell you how to learn how
what your limit is, and how much space you are using.
