Remote VPN Access to Computers on the More Secure Network

Update: the UVa More Secure network VPN profile is now part of the standard ITC VPN distribution. All users are encouraged to install the updated standard VPN package instead of downloading and installing the More Secure network VPN profile as described below. The next Apple Macintosh release of the VPN client will include access to the More Secure network. ITC expects to release the updated Macintosh version before the start of the fall semester.

  • Remember that the UVa More Secure network VPN in place now is temporary and is a Windows-only solution using PKI for authentication.

  • Steps to install VPN access
    1. Install the UVa Anywhere VPN service on your PC. This involves getting a personal certificate, downloading the VPN client, and installing the software.

    2. Download the More Secure network VPN Profile and save it to your PC's hard disk. Depending on the configuration of your PC, you may need to right-click on the link above and use the Save Target As option.

    3. Start the VPN client but do not establish a VPN connection. Click on the Options button and select Import Entry option. Browse to the folder where you stored the More Secure network VPN profile. The file name should be UVa-More-Secure-Network.pcf. Select this file and click the Open button. This will import the new profile into your VPN client.

    4. Select the ITC More Secure Network Connection Entry, then press the Options button and select the Properties option. Go to the Authentication tab and select your certificate. This is the same procedure that you followed when you installed and tested UVa Anywhere.

  • You will now be able to establish a VPN connection to the ITC More Secure network and access computer systems located on the secure network.
