ITC, in a collaboration with the University Libraries, LNEC and other departments, is striving to make assistive technologies available across Grounds to all students, faculty, and staff. We currently have the following pieces of hardware and software available. If you have specific requests for other devices or assistive technologies, or have questions please contact LNEC directly or email assistivetech@virginia.edu.
Available Hardware
- Headphones are available for checkout at the Clemons Library circulation desk.
- Adjustable desks are available in the Clemons Library.
Available Software
Kurzweil
- Kurzweil 3000
- (Windows v. 10 and Macintosh v. 3) - A comprehensive reading, writing and learning software for those individuals with learning difficulties, dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, or those who are English Language Learners. The "Learn Station" version is available on all ITC lab and classroom computers. This version allows users to open previously scanned documents as well as other electronic documents (e.g. PDF, Word). "Professional Color" (Windows only) scanning software is installed on all scanning stations in the ITC public labs. If Kurzweil is part of your accommodation, it can be installed on your personal computer. Contact LNEC for additional information.

- (Windows v. ) - Makes printed or electronic text readily available to people who are blind or visually impaired. Contact LNEC for more information regarding access to this version.
JAWS
- JAWS for Windows
- A screen reader which provides speech technology to access popular software applications and the Internet. Workstations with JAWS are available in the U.Va. Law School computing lab (contact Derek Leach at 434-924-7354 for account access) and in 102 of Clemons Library on central grounds (check out a key for this room at the main circulation desk).
ZoomText
- ZoomText v. 8
- The workstation on the main floor of Clemons Library (4th floor), next to the printers has ZoomText installed. It also has a scanner with an automatic document feeder attached. Kurzweil Read/Scan v.9 is also currently installed on this machine.
Dragon Naturally Speaking
- Dragon Naturally Speaking v. 7
- Located in room 102 of Clemons Library. The key for access to the room can be checked out from the main circulation desk.
