Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Freehand (Mac and Windows)
Every Windows and Macintosh computer at ACHS is equipped with Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Freehand, two popular and powerful image applications that are used primarily to prepare and annotate images for presentation or publication. Photoshop is designed to manipulate digital photographs and other pixel-based images. Image files can be transferred between Photoshop and other programs such as ImageQuant and Image-Pro Plus. Freehand is best for annotations, scaleable drawings, and other vector-based images.
ImageQuant(Mac and Windows)
Every Windows and Macintosh computer at ACHS is equipped with ImageQuant, which is used to scan and quantify 1-dimensional gels (either stained gels or X-ray plates). Typical applications include quantifying the increase in RNA or protein expression. It has powerful tools to separate bands and integrate peaks. ImageQuant data can be exported to Excel spreadsheets. Images of gels acquired by the imagers in Jordan Hall and MR4 can be transferred via the network to ACHS's Data Acquisition Laboratory for analysis and preparation for publishing. ImageQuant is site-licensed for use on University-owned laboratory computers running Mac OS, Windows 9x, or Windows NT/2000. Installation disks may be borrowed from ACHS. For more information see documents ACHS-103 (Win NT/2000), ACHS-104 (Win 9x), and ACHS-204 (Mac).
Image-Pro Plus (Windows)
Image-Pro Plus is a software package used for image acquisition, enhancement, and analysis. It is configured to acquire image data from our Olympus Microscope. The software has the ability to read and generate image data in many formats including TIFF, JPEG, BMP, and TGA. Image data can be enhanced using a large variety of color and contrast filters including Fast Fourier Transforms, morphology, and background subtraction. Image-Pro Plus enables users to trace and count objects manually or automatically. Object attributes such as length, area, perimeter and angle can be measured, and the image can be calibrated to your desired unit of measure. For more information, see the Image Pro home page.
