eXceed is an X Window client for Windows PCs, and as such, will allow use of GCG's X Window graphic inteface, SeqLab
- Connection type is "Secure Shell (TCP/IP)"
- Host is "watson.achs.virginia.edu"
- User ID is your standard UVa computing/mail id
- you may leave the password field blank - you will be prompted for it
- Command is "xterm -ls -sb" (this will open a terminal session and setup your UNIX environment)
eXceed is available from ITC's Research Computing Support Center, (see the RCS Software Licensing web page for information) and can be picked up at either of two locations:
The Scholars' Lab at Alderman Library (243-8800)
The Research Computing Lab in the Brown Science and Engineering Library (243-8799)You will need to get not only the eXceed 8 installation CD, but, once installed, you will need to add the Hummingbird Connectivity Security Pack 7.1 (see instructions on the page link above). This will allow eXceed to make secure shell connections to the GCG server, watson.achs.virginia.edu (watson only permits secure shell connections).
Follow the instructions on the RCSC eXceed page (above) to install eXceed and the Security Pack. Once you have done this, follow the instructions below to setup eXceed for connecting to watson to run SeqLab.
From the Windows "start" menu, click on eXceed

Once eXceed has started up, right-click on the eXceed task-bar icon, and choose "Tools -> Client Startup -> New..."

Once the new client setup dialog box appears, enter the following:

To permanently save this configuration!!
Click on "File -> Save as" and save the configuration. Take note of where you are saving to (the default is buried deep in your Windows user's "Documents and Settings" folder!). A convenient approach is to save to your desktop, and name the configuration "watson". This will place an "watson" eXceed icon on your desktop. Double clicking this icon will now initiate your connection, prompt you for your password, and log you into watson.
At this point, clicking the "Run!" menu-bar command will log you into watson, prompting your for your password once it connects. At the terminal prompt, typing "gcg" will initiate the Wisconsin package. Your command prompt will now become ">GCG>", and typing "seqlab" will bring up the seqlab interface to GCG.

As of February 5th, 2007, this will now say "Version 11.1.3-UNIX"
