[Sep 04, 2008 18:43] Emergency downtime - Central Exchange Service mailstore 3 is experiencing a problem and must be taken offline. Time-to-resolution is not yet known. ITC is working to resolve the problem.

[Sep 04, 2008 17:32] Access to ITC ESERVICES Exchange Mailstore 7 will be intermittent for the next 2-4 hours as we check to make sure the mailstore remounted correctly.

This page tells how to print documents from your computer on the U.Va. network to an ACHS specialty printer. To use these printers, you must have an ACHS printing account which you can request at http://print.achs/account_help.html

Remote printing is available to these ITC-ACHS machines:

  • Two Codonics dye-sublimation printers (on Kodak paper). Printing on the Codonics printers is not free. You pay for each sheet that leaves the printer.
  • One Tektronix color laser printer. This service costs $1.00 per page.

After sending your job to print you must release it at https://print.itc.virginia.edu/achs.

The following sections describe how to configure your printers for Windows 2000 or XP, and Macintosh.

Windows 2000/XP

  • Make sure you have a copy of the proper printer driver(s). A driver is a file that specifies how your computer communicates with a device. The driver for the ginko greyscale printers is called Kodak XLS 8600 PS. It can be found on your Windows installation CD.
  • Enable the Windows Service that allows your computer to talk directly to the printer via LPR. To print to the Codonics printers from Windows 2000/XP, enable Print Services for Unix on your computer. You may need the Windows installation CD.
    1. Click on Start--Settings--Control Panels.
    2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    3. Select Add/Remove Windows Components from the left menu bar.
    4. Highlight Other Network File and Print Services, then click Detail
    5. Check the box beside Print Services for Unix, and click OK.
  • Configure your computer to use the printer. Click Start--Settings--Printers. In the Printers window, double-click Add Printer. The Add Printer Wizard will appear. Click the Next > button in each window to go to the next step.
    1. Choose the button marked Local Printer. Do NOT check Automatically detect...
    2. Choose Create a new port. Select LPR Port from the drop-down list. (If LPR Port is not in the list, you will need to install Print Services for Unix onto your computer - see above.)
    3. Enter the name and queue of the printer into the proper boxes. Click the OK button.
      • For the Greyscale printer, choose Kodak from the list of manufacturers, and choose Kodak XLS 8600 PS from the list of printers
      • For the Color dye-sub printer, click on the Have Disk button, enter "\\ginko3.achs.virginia.edu\printers" into the "Copy manufacturers files from" box. Select Browse and select whichever operating system you are currently using.
      • For the HP printer, choose Color LaserJet 4700dn. If the right printer name does not appear, install the driver on your computer. If you are asked whether you want to keep your existing driver, choose Yes (unless you suspect that your driver is corrupted).
    1. After this, three dialog boxes will appear:
      1. In the first, enter an easy-to-remember name for the printer, like "ACHS Ginko (B&W)" or "ACHS color laser ". Do NOT make this printer your default.
      2. In the second, choose that the printer be NOT SHARED.
      3. In the third, choose NOT to print a test page.

That's it! If things went well, the new printer will appear in the printer window, and you should be able to select it in future print menus.
