General Use Policy
- Use of the equipment and labs at ACHS is intended primarily for faculty, staff and students in the Health System and in related bioscience research departments such as Biology and Chemistry.
- Users should be familiar with the computer operating system they intend to use (UNIX, Mac, Windows) and have a general understanding of computer networking at the University of Virginia.
Computer Accounts
- Use and security of all computer accounts at UVA are restricted as per the Computer Use Policy set forth by the Department of Information Technology and Communication (ITC).
- Users must obtain a Unix account from ITC before they can access the UNIX computers at ITC-ACHS. This account will give the user access to all of the UNIX machines and supported UNIX software at ITC-ACHS.
- Those who wish to use the Macintosh OS X server MEDUSER for capturing images and temporary file storage must fill out a MEDUSER account request form. MEDUSER accounts are given only to faculty and staff at the University of Virginia. Use of the dye-sublimation printers is intended for research use only.
- Departure from the University and/or Medical Center will result in deletion of your account as will non-use for a period of 1 year. You may re-apply for an account at any time should your account be deleted because of non-use.
Lab Use Policy
- No food or drink is allowed in the labs.
- Computers and equipment may be reserved for use according to the policies listed under Reserving Equipment and Rooms. Users may use any equipment as long as another person is not currently using it, but they must relinquish their seat immediately if the reservation holder arrives within 20 minutes of his/her reservation time. If you do not wish to use all of your reserved time, please indicate your changes in the reservation calendar.
- Microcomputer users: Files may be stored on the MEDUSER server for a maximum of 14 days. After that time they are automatically deleted. Iomega ZIP drives and CD burners are available for your use in the labs for archiving your files. Users must supply their own media (available at Cavalier Computers).
- Installation of software and downloading software from the internet to the lab computer hard drives is EXPRESSLY PROHIBITED. Failure to abide by this policy may cause the loss of ACHS privileges. If you have software that you wish to make available on one of the ITC-ACHS machines, contact the ITC-ACHS office via email at achs-secretary@virginia.edu or by telephone at 982-4025.
- DO NOT disconnect any network cables from machines in the labs. If you need network access for a portable computer, there is a dedicated spare network port in the Teaching Lab for this purpose.
- If you are the last to leave the lab area after hours please remember to turn off the lights and secure all doors. All computers and monitors are to be left ON.
