To members of the UVa community, ITC offers limited support in using the Linux operating system. ITC support is available in the following areas:
- Software. ITC provides an install server that includes the Red Hat Linux operating system, the StarOffice productivity suite, and other enhancements. The installation is pre-configured to work on the UVa network. (No version of the installation is available for at-home use.)
- Problem Resolution. Questions and requests for assistance in using Linux can be directed to the ITC Help Desk at (434) 924-3731, between the hours of 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday. Help can also be obtained from the ITC general consulting email address, helpdesk@virginia.edu.
- Documentation. Ample documentation for most aspects of the Linux operating system can be found on a multitude of Linux-oriented websites, some of which are listed on the ITC Linux home page. Additionally, ITC provides some documents specific to use of Linux at UVa, including instructions for installing Linux from our installation server. ITC's Linux documentation is geared toward intermediate to advanced users; novice users should plan on augmenting their knowledge with published manuals, training (see below), or other resources. - Training. ITC offers several workshops on UNIX topics which can be of interest to novice Linux administrators. Details are available from the ITC Training website.
- For-fee Services. ITC offers a variety of fee-based services in support of UNIX operating systems, including Linux, on UVa machines. For a list of such services, including prices, see the UNIX System Services page.
